2004 silver proof set - my TX quarter was hammered

I am in the process of re-packing my very first silver proof set. My Texas quarter was dinged up beyond belief for a sealed proof set. The star had a big (1/4 inch) qouge in it. one edge was all scratched up. A bit of something was stuck to the front of the coin. All this was easily visible to the naked eye. I am really disappointed. My very first silver set for 40 years and I have to send it back yo the mint. What a hassle.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Get the sets when they first come out, or get them very late in the deal.......else, no matter what the mint says, it appears that people get other people's returns image

(I had to send some mint sets back last year......no returns this year though....so far...crossing fingers and stuff)

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Is it clearly shipping damage or does it look like something that the dies might do? If it looks like damage during striking, I'd hold it and order another one.

  • Naw, I wanted it to be a striking error. I really did. I looked verrrryyy closely. But this was clearly monkey-for-brains handling damage. It dropped on the floor or some such thing.

I sent one back August 3rd. One quarter had a struck through lint error that I did not want. I am still waiting for the replacement set.

I'm sending sets back too. I've seen spotted Sacs, hazed Lincolns, and fingerprinted Roosevelts, but no hammered Texas.

It's tough to actually find a set with reasonably presentable coins, much less worth $40.

Would anyone here actually be willing to pay a premium for hand picked "select proof" sets from the Mint?

If you happen to pass through DC, you can buy U.S. Mint products at Union Station. The staff will let you inspect your purchase before you pay and pick the set you like. This is true for anything they have on sale. Also, the benefit of no shipping and of course no tax.

For what it is worth, the two sets I bought last week were probably DC69 coins all the way around. The U.S. Mint really makes some nice coins.
