Help with an Ebay sale....

Hi all,
Here's the situation. I sold a couple of GSA Morgans(one sale) an Ebay. The buyer who has 26 Positive no Negatives send me an email....

"My cousin is the one that bought this item. and would like the information to send you a check for the item. I am sorry if this is a hassle for you. Thank you for your help"

Now the question I have is, who do I send the coins to? The buyer(ebayer) or the person(cousin) who's name is on the check?

I'm thinking...take only a Money Order and send it to the Ebay buyer(not cousin) and use a "domestic return reciept" and I'll have a signed confirmation that the items were delivered to the Ebayer who made the winning bid...

Has this happened to any else?

Thanks
Tom

I'd simply wait for the check to clear the bank and ship it to whatever address they want it to go to.

I'd ship it only to the registered user's address. If you don't, he might say he never got it and claim the address you used was not provided by him, but by someone who pirated his account.

As long as the eMail he received originated from the same address as the buyer has registered on eBay, I don't see a problem. Hacking an eBay account is one thing, but also gaining access to the user's eMail is very unlikely.

Edited to add: What's the dollar amount you're dealing with?

    Thanks for the input.

His email adress is basicaly the same as his Ebay user name and it matches the email adress that is posted on the "your item sold email" from Ebay. As far as I'm concerned I don't see a problem with a "weird or off the wall" email being sent to me. Just never had a buyer saying the check will be from some else. The buyers Phone number was also included in the Ebay email. I might just call him tommorow to confirm.

    The amount is around $550

    Thanks

  • I have just learned the hard way that emails are not considered as valid proof because they can be manipulated to easily! You are legally obligated to ship the item to the owner of the account! They may then ship it where ever they wish!

    Joe!
  • ship only to buyers address, sending elsewhere you are asking for big trouble.

I agree, if the guy was such a friend to let his "cousin" pay on your auction he will be in delivering it also.

It's truly funny, no make that truly sad, that people in this day and age are so wrapped up in their own little world that they refuse to try and teach someone else the correct or accepted way of doing things.

Ask the buyer to include a note, as to where he would like the items sent, when he sends you the check. That way you are covered.

  • I wouldnt take a check from someone else (a third party check). It could be a stolen or counterfit check. I would ask for the money order. I might be a little more paranoid than most , but I have dealt with alot of identity theft people and have seen what they can do.

  • My desire to sell on eBay as a go it alone seller is zilch because of crap like this. Tell him he shouldn't let his cousin use his computer to bid and eBay and the deal is off. Of course, not being a seller I can say stuff like that.

  • Call or Email the guy whose Ebay account was used, tell him to send you the $550.0 via Postal Money Order, send him the coin priority mail with delivery confirmation (maybe even signature confirmation), and have him forward the coin to his cousin.

I think everybody is making too much out of this. Send it to the person and address who the check is from, as they are legally the one making the purchase. Make sure the check clears before shipping the item, since you don't know the person.
