Opinions on this 1829

What do you think of its possible grade and LM/R? I'm thinking low XF obverse with a high VF reverse making a nice VF coin. My only concern would be what looks like a horizontal scratch over the wing of the eagle.

Edited to add: Also, just noticed "something" over the "M" in AMERICA...possibly PVC?

I tried to clean the images up some but still tough to judge. My guess XF and I do think you have a wee bit of PVC up there. A acetone bath may be in order.

I can see a lot of that green/blue stuff on the rev and a little on the obv, Is it PVC?? Looks nice other than that.

  • 1829 looks like LM-13.1 Are there any die crack on the reverse? Specificly from A2 to the rim, R to rim, Rim to I, or through the tops of MER? It doesn't matter too much. LM-13.1 is R-1 and 13.2 is R-2

    VF35.

I can't make out the supposed PVC or the scratch- I'm at work and this monitor has some stupid 256-color setting or something- it makes every image look grainy, and I can't change the settings.

another example of a coin w/ CHARACTER. that scratch occurred 150 years ago. why decry it? it's part of that coin's history!!! we're not talking about a kennedy half or a ike dollar here.

coins like this SHOULD have evidence of having actually been used for their intended purpose, unlike the wondercoins double-mega pr-70 ucam+++ coins of today.

i like this coin A LOT, & if you don't want it, will gladly relieve you of the horrible burden of owning a coin w/ the tiniest of blemishes.

I like it, and agree with a strong VF grade. But I would check closely to see if it needs a PVC intervention.....

  • Is this a coin you currently own, or one you are considering for purchase? If the latter, the seller should be able to tell you what the green gunk is. The scratch is simply that -- a scratch. It's up to you to decide what you think the coin is worth, faults included.

Anyone looking for perfect coins for the grade will regret every purchase. This is so even with "perfect" MS70s. It is assumed that coins will have an apropriate degree of abrasions, other than simple wear, relative to their level of detail. The trick is to modulate what you consider to be "fault-free" based upon your interests, budget, and patience.

Overall, this is a fine looking piece, but not a full trends coin.

This only gets tougher as you pursue the varieties and are forced to accept some ugly coins if you want to fill the holes.
