1967 SMS DDO 25c- how rare and what is its value?

bumanchubumanchu Posts: 1,383 ✭✭✭
I recently acquired a 1967 SMS set that has a DDO 25c in it that looks to be in MS66 condition or thereabout.

Does anyone know the relative level of rarity of this coin and what its approximate value would be?

I will be leaving for work soon and will not be able to attempt to make photos until possibly tomorrow.

This website is blocked at my job, but I will be looking forward to reading your comments later tonight when I'm back home.

Thanks,

Michael

Is the coin a Stage A-without additional strike doubling, or a Stage B-with additional strike doubling? Stage A would be worth $250-$300; Stage B around $150-$200.

The doubling appears to be limited to the motto and the doubling is shifted to the south. There is an outward spike in the inside corner of the seven also. I just cleaned my best loupe (17x) with windex and now it is fogged up and I can't see too well with it presently. Ha, ha...just my luck

Try to get an image of "LIBERTY." The doubling shows better there.

I have looked closely at the coin with my 17x loupe and there is doubling of "Liberty". However the doubling is stronger on the motto. The doubling on "liberty" is as follows: southern shift on L,I, B, E, R and western shift on T and Y--with respect to each letter viewed individually.

There are spikes in the interior angled areas of the 9,6, and 7 in the date.

Again the doubling is much more pronounced on the motto "In God We Trust".

I do not think that a picture of "liberty" would show anything because of the limitations of my digital still camera.

The greatest separation should be on the T in TRUST. There appear to
be two crossbars for the T on the rare DDO.

I don't really know how rare this is since I've not seen enough to guess,
but it's by no means common.

I have two pieces both graded by NGC as FS-26.5. The MS67 example shows both die doubling and machine doubling. The tail of the R in Liberty looks tripled. On the MS68 example, there is no machine doubling and the R in Liberty is only doubled. The motto is as described above - Cladking has it right, the first T in Trust looks like it has two crossbars. I have seen very few of them for sale.

Upon closer inspection of your photos, it looks more like machine doubling to me. The photos do not resemble the two pieces I have. On my coin, the machine doubling is to the west, not to the south as it appears in the photos on the U in Trust.

The good doubled die-2-O-I-should show a fairly strong counter clockwise spread on the entire word LIBERTY.
Less so on the date. If the coins is a strike doubling, it can be easily confused with the real thing by looking at the motto-hence, my suggestion to look at LIBERTY.
