So, did anyone here pony up for the crazy money this guy gets for his raw stuff? I gave the McRae IA and the Kendall a shot, but at $60+ and $20+ respectively, they were just too rich for my blood. This guy has good stuff, but this is insane.

  • i made a run for a few cards, put a serious bid in for the mcrae ia. i didn't want to go higher because the top to bottom centering was a little off and i didn't want to take a chance on owning another 75 dollar PSA 7.....i've had no luck in submitting mcrae ia's. 0-3, i think.
brad horton won the mcrae ia and i was glad to see that.
a few weeks ago i won a mint 78 topps set from him, the cards were so nice it would bring a tear to the eye of the most discerning collector. i'm hoping for at least 70-80 psa 9's and a few 10's. for less than 200 bucks, i expect a better yield than any 78 vending box.

    Yeah,

I had a bunch of lowball snipe bids in on the Waverly auctions. No winners, but I was a bridesmaid on about 25 of them. Figured if I could win em cheap - it would make up for not being able to hold the card in my hand first!

Oh well... more cash for The Fort!

  • I too am shocked at the numbers that Waverly (Eric) has been able to get for his "Raw" cards on ebay.

His stuff is nice if you are putting together a nrmt to mt raw set in binders, but if you want to get it graded I think that you will be dissapointed as most will get 7's or maybe some 8's.

But I think that this is true for all ebay sellers who sell raw material, as grading is very subjective to the person who is trying to sell the card.

Miami> I think buying raw cards with the intent to submit them is always a risk-and-reward proposition. You have to ask yourself "Can I live with it if this card comes back a grade (or two) lower than what I'm hoping for?". If that happens, how will I feel about paying $X for the card? Buying the cards from eBay where you have only a scan to go by only increases the risk side of the equation.

Let's take the raw 72T McRae IA that Waverly put up. It went for $67.02. At that price, I'd have to be VERY sure in my mind that the card would come back an 8NQ or better - just to break even. If I was totally confident that the card would unquestionably make an 8 and have a chance at a 9, I might be inclined to pay the $67 if I needed the card. The risk could be worth the potential upside of a 9. But if I felt it only had a chance at an 8, there's no way. For a raw card on eBay, I think the buyer of this card is taking a very big risk that the card is perfect and has a shot at a 9. If Waverly missed a surface wrinkle, the buyer paid $67 for a PSA5. I have every reason to believe the card is advertised, but the level of risk stays the same.

I hope it works out for the buyer. As long as he's happy, that's all that matters. Historically, the McRae IA has been a $60-$70 card in PSA8 NQ. So the sale price of the raw card surprised me a bit. Does anyone know why Waverly didn't submit these on his own?

A few months back I bought three cards from Waverly: two that he graded NM/MT and one that was graded Mint. I got 2 7's and an 8. Exactly one grade lower.
  • i've been dealing with eric for a few years and lately his prices have been exploding. i'm sure this has alot to do with customer satisfaction. he is a true gentleman, any time i had an issue with a card i thought was overgraded or if he missed something i always received a refund.
from what i've bought from him, i've had psa 10's graded and my share of expensive psa 7's.
buying raw from anyone is usually a calculated risk, but lately the prices of his auctions have become to high and usually not worth the risk.
"back in the day" i paid 66 bucks for a 72 mays and mays ia that both graded 8 , less than 50 bucks for a 72 rose that graded an 8 and less than a hundred bucks for a common lot of 72's that yielded a couple of 10's and a bunch of 9's, those days are gone....

highend> The bargains are out there if you are able to dig them up. My Aaron IA was picked up for ~$10 raw at a show - became a PSA8. Picked up a Mays IA for about the same. Obviously it helps to be able to go to major shows. image
