what's with ebay showing bid amount in bid history on current auctions

I don't like it. Some bidders have patterns on their bids (let say 25.51, 35.51) and could be determined by others.

Bid history

  • Interesting, this happen once before that I remember. It only lasted a couple of hours.

Must have something to do with the change they made to that screen.

  • I remember they used to show the zip codes of the bidders instead of email addresses to sellers. I don't remember how long it lasted.

Actually, I can't see where knowing the bid history amounts ahead of time will really help one way or the other when trying to win an auction. About half the time, I get sniped on an auction by a bidder who never places a bid until the last 30 seconds. Not criticizing that - I do that myself sometimes, depending on the auction.

<<Ebay comment: To increase the transparency of the marketplace and to provide members with more information, we will be introducing several enhancements to the Bid History page (links to Bid History can be found on any item page) over the next few days. The key changes are listed below:>>

Ebay makes me laugh though! If they really want to do something worthwhile about "increasing the transparency of the marketplace" then they should eliminate private bidding, private feedback, pre-approved bidders lists, etc., in which virtually all the time these things are associated with scammers to some degree.

I suspect that if people know their exact bid will be visible to others, they will make a conscious effort not to be predictable. Or choose to snipe more often.
  • Another reason that sniping is the way to go.

  • Ebay has created this Thread
so that users can "discuss" their thoughts on the
    new Bid History "enhancements"...

    it should be fun reading!

i snipe.. but i like other people to bid early..

at least this doesnt show the high bidders "actual" high bid..

  • This is a welcome improvement. I could never figure out why the underbids were hidden until the close of auction in the first place.

Actually it will if the high bidder's maximum bid is less than one full bid increment above the #2 bidder.

I, for one am against this change. I guess I will resort to 100% snipingimage

has anyone noticed that the time remaining feature does not include the minute? only on the watch page can u see the exact time left on an auction. on the page itself it is rounded only to the hr.
    Good for you.
  • it is showing the day and hour now
    but below it says
the Exact minute the auction will end.
    5 days 14 hours
    10-day listing
    Ends Aug-29-04 21:33:06 PDT

so I expect that when it is inside of one hour
left, it will count down the minutes and then
inside a minute it will count seconds.

    yahoo also had first
    completed auctions history
    watch list
    etc.

i am still waiting for ebay to do the feedback page like yahoo

  • It may encourage more bidding. For example a card with a $100 SMR is at $102.51 - one would think that the underbidder placed a $100.01 bid so the high bidder is at that + $2.50. But now you can see the underbidder may be at $101.00 and then you'd know the high bidder is barely hanging on. This is about the only distinction I see. I guess people who always bid the same amount of change like $ XX.12 should start mixing it up so they don't become predictable. But of course, sniping is still supreme!

I'd imagine it might make shilling a little more obvious durring the actual auction too. We'll be able to see what the bumpers are doing, while they are doing it.
