It's about damned time I got a decent eBay score.

Marty and Don and the rest of the vultures have been getting them all lately, leaving me with nothing.

Finally caught them napping when this Accented Hair proof set closed.

Got it in today, and it's a pleasant surprise!

image

Exceptional deep, glassy uninterrupted mirrors. Devices aren't there for deep cameo, but it's a no-brainer cameo grading a solid PR67CAM. image

Actually, I couldn't tell it was a cameo. That was the pleasant surprise part. I just knew it was an Accented Hair.

I wasn't guessing anything. The auction image clearly shows that the coin is an Accented Hair. Stevie Wonder could see it.

Yes, but then it would be all fingerprintedimage

Now here's one I did guess on:

    image

I was only at about 70% certainty on that one. Picked those two sets off for $20, and the Accented Hair graded PR68CAM. Spent the other coins. image

Yeah, fortunately I bank with BOFA, so I didn't have to hassle with getting a money order.

I'm guessing Russ asked for larger pics before bidding. image

I'm gonna say no. The light reflected off the bottom of the I in Liberty makes it look like a full serif.

With that blurry pic anything could happen tho. image

Nope. Just verified that it was the actual set he was selling. Larger pics weren't necessary since it was so glaringly obvious that it stuck out like a flashing neon sign screaming "I'm an Accented Hair snipe me before Marty finds me!"

This one on the reverse looks like the rays are broken under the UNUM which (according to Russ's web site) would most likely indicate an AH. Sure is a togh call from those pics. I guess if you have seen 100's you can spot them in your sleep.

"...reality has a well-known liberal bias." -- Stephen Colbert
  • This is the reason why I only bid on items that I know I will be home for when they close, so I can babysit them. I don't overpay for stuff either. If the bidding goes beyond what the price guide says it should go for, I drop out. I saw a $75 MS67 Roosie sell for $150 tonight, and it had the most hideous toning you've ever seen. I had the max bid at one point, but refused to go over $75, my max bid. I also have ways of getting in multiple bids in a few seconds, without using bid bots, but I won't reveal my secrets here in case I end up bidding against some of you someday. image

BTW How DID you know that was an accented hair piece??? I looked at the image on both my CRT monitor on my desktop, then again on the much sharper LCD screen on my laptop, and I still don't see it. Did you blow up the image in Photoshop or ask the seller for a closeup on the half??

Russ, what do you think it grades? DCAM? And yes, I'll guess the other one IS an Accented Hair. Although I don't know the variety like you do...but I can pick a die variety out on a 1921-D like a fly on ....
  • RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
Okay, maybe this will be a little easier for you guys to see with the image rotated:

    image

See the little "V" inside the yellow circle? It jumps right out and says "Hi, I'm an Accented Hair". image

<< <i>Russ, what do you think it grades? DCAM? >>

It has the requisite mirror clarity and depth for DCAM, but the devices are a little too silvery. Grades PR67CAM, although because of the mirror depth, I wouldn't be surprised to see an eye appeal bump to 68CAM.

I did see that in the original pic but i guess i dismissed it as either a mark on the cello or a lighting refelection.

Good catch Russ image Congrats' on another great find.

    I am humbled image

I picked this set up over the weekend:

    image

Here's the half up close (not that you need a better pic, Russ):

    image

Was I correct in attributing this one as an Accented HAir? If so, I have another question - the obverse die is slightly doubled, visible best on the serifs of the date and slightly on WE TRUST. I have another in the safe with very similar doubling which I believe is the same die and also an AH. Does that mean all AH Kennedies are doubled dies?

You were indeed. I see it has the milk spots that are so common on these, though. Bummer.

    Right again!

It's hard to say for certain, but the top one might be. Here's a comparison of the two:

Upon closer inspection it looks like one of my dimes is a pointed 9 then. Are they worth much of a premium over a blunt 9? I would guess the dime is a PR66 or 67.

Thanks, Russ. Well cool, now I have a rationale for hoarding them, too. image

I need to take pics of the one in the safe, its not a cameo but fully brilliant with no hairlines, milk spots, or contact marks at all. Problem is, it's been in a cardboard 2x2, which started off some bronze toning in a couple of spots where the perforated cardboard inside the window was in contact with the rim . Maybe I'll send it west as one of my four freebies...

No, unless they're very high grade deep cameo. PCGS won't even note them. NGC will under their Variety Plus service.

TTT. Got a chance to play with the camera tonite and snapped the coin I referenced above. These are right off the camera, tomorrow I'll play with them in Photoshop and bring out the toning spot on the reverse at 3:00.
