First graded results....

...and I have to say, wow, I am surprised. Not in a good, way, either.

The '71s, I assumed would get poor grades. I just wanted to get them slabbed. I always though I had a good eye when it came to considering cards, but it seems now that I really have no idea whatsoever.

With the grades, do they give any sort of indicator why they get certain grades? For example, will they say why my Boggs rookies received 6s? I went in thinking they were solid 8s, and I really have no idea whatsoever how they got 6s.

I am sure they are deserving of these grades, but I really want to find out how I can get a better handle on what grades my cards will be getting.

Thoughts?

I studied many PSA 8's under magnification before my first submission.

Lets just say I started with 200 "sure-fire" 8's and ended up submitting 32. 29 came back 8's or better.

    Loves me some shiny!

The Yaz, Fisk and Munson were your lowest graded. What grades were you expecting? Did you perhaps miss some hairline creasing?

    EDIT: link added

That is actually the best advice ever! if new submitters have access to good examples they should study actual slabbed PSA 7's, 8's, and 9's (and 10's... if possible) that would be the fastest way to get a real handle on what the should look like. (unlike most of us that learn the long hard way by submitting until figure it out.... image )

When you get the cards back, you should be able to tell exactly why they got the grades that they did if you examine them using a 10x loupe. The Boggs that got the 6's are probably more off-center than you thought, or have more corner wear than you could see under the naked eye, or could be missing some of it's original gloss on the surface. They may be interchangable with 7's, but would probably never get anything higher than that, thus would not be worth attempting to resubmit.

A hairline wrinkle will automatically bring a card down to at least a 5, and hairline creases generally bring it down to a 3.

When you look at the A-Rod, you will be able to see what a solid 9 looks like... the corners will be nearly perfect, with little to no wear detectable under 10x magnification, and reason the card wasn't a 10 was due to either the slightest off-centering or very minor chipping along an edge.

The Jordan 8 is a very good thing, as that card has a lot of fakes, so depending on how you acquired it, it's a good thing that it is authentic.

    Thanks everyone for the feedback...

I guess it will be a good thing to have a graded card that is a 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 on hand so I can see specifically what the differences are. I will pick up one of those magnifiers too, as I am sure it will help with the really small dings and whatnot that I am sure are what brought down the grades of the Boggs cards.

As far as the Jordan goes, it's a pretty funny story how I attained it. I bought a box of the '86-7 fleer cards way back when they were new...a friend and I had left the card store, stopped at the mini mart next door, and they were selling the boxes at $10 a shot. We each bought a box, tore through em, and pretty much forgot about them. I found them about 8 years ago cleaning out a closet...all the cards still there, lots of dupes, mostly commons, but I had 2 Jordans.

I am anxiously waiting the return from my second shipment I sent...should have them soon.

Sorry for the additional post, but are there any recommendations on loupes? Models, prices, where to get them?

    Thanks!

Go to JoAnn Fabrics and get a 10x thread counter, should be about $6.
  • what was the turnaround service you used?

Actually that was what was surprising. I used 'modern' which is supposed to bewhat, 30 days? I sent the cards Aug 9, they received them Aug 12, and I had the results today.

Well, got the second batch of results, and can't say I am surprised, especially seeing the first batch. Anyways, here goes:

    Second Batch

The 87 Fleer Bonds at 9 was a nice surprise though...figured they'd all be 8s. With dupe Jordan 8s, think it will be time to sell one and invest some money elsewhere.

Kind of bummed the 86 bonds all got 8s, some 9s would have been nice...oh well. There's always next time.

    edit: fixed link
  • what was the service level on this submission?

i just sent in a submission and i want to see if they are a head of schedule or not.
  • I've been out of the loop for a while, but then my father-in-law found his Velveeta cheese box with about 4-500 cards. Most of the good ones are 55s and 56s (including 2 Koufax rookies, 2 56 Mantles). A bunch of 54s also, but not as good condition-wise (Aaron, Mays, Banks). Interestingly, no high numbers from any year.

    Here are my free six:

I don't think we'll have any more 8s, but I think there are a good number of 7s.

Anyway, I included a Modern lot and an Economy lot in the box with my free submission. The lots were received 8/11 and Modern grades posted 8/13. The free grades were posted 8/19. Still waiting on Economy.

This was my free batch of 6. I am not sure what speed it is, but I think they say 5-7 business days.
