    I'm a bit prejudiced:

    1874-cc dime F-VF
    1842-0 SD quarter VF
    1851-0 quarter VF
    1852-0 quarter VF
    1860-s quarter VF

    1866-s quarter VF
    1867-s quarter XF
    1871-s quarter VF
    1872-s quarter VF

Those are the ones I would want to own for future appreciation.

Key date coins are cool but I really think some of the semi key dates and some of the so called common date coins that you plain cannot find are more of a challenge to obtain. One of these days, who knows when though, these coins will see their day. To some extent this is happening now but still there is much more potential to be realized with the semi's and so called commons in the future. Less downside if the market should go sour again also.

While I couldn't come up with a Top Ten list, I would certainly say that stuff like this should be considered.

Hmm. If I picked standard key dates for popular series, no overdates or varieties, no patterns or proof-only issues...here we go. Not the 10 most valuable, but the most timeless and classic key/desirable dates:

    1877 IHC
    1909-S VDB cent
    1914-D cent
    1885 Liberty nickel
    1916-D dime
    1901-S quarter
    1932-D quarter
    1916 SLQ
    1889-CC dollar
    1893-S dollar

[EDIT -- I didn't pick the condition, because it's really in the pocketbook of the beholder. I'd say MS-67 for everything otherwise.]

Semi-key coins can be a lot more fun ... not as hyped as the "well known keys," and usually a fraction of the price, but nonetheless often more difficult to find. The 1886 liberty nickel, for example, is half the price (or less) than the 1885 liberty nickel, yet I haven't seen nearly as many of the 1886's come to auction lately as I have 1885's...

  • From an investment standpoint, in the Buffalo nickel arena, and in PCGS holders, these are very difficult to locate and are on many wantlists.
They are not the rarest, but IMO, they offer excellent and the best potential appreciation and are relatively inexpensive. The sheets are out of touch with the market. Also think the pop reports may be a bit high as these coins are sometimes resubmitted. Recommended grade is AU with AU58 preferred. Be aware there are quite a few market graded coins around. Stick to the coins that are technically AU.

I'm working on a key date type set. These are the one's I've slated as the ones I want to have before getting into some of the earlier key dates. So far, I only have two, the SVDB and 1893-S dollar. I'm scoping a nice 1877 indian, though.

1877 indian cent VF or better
    1909-S VDB AU or better
    1885 nickel XF or better
1937-D three legged buff AU or better
    1916-D Merc G or better
1916 Standing Lib Quarter VG or better
    1932-D Quarter AU or better
    1921-S Half VF or better
    1893-S Morgan VF or better
    1889-CC Morgan VF or better

    Peter,
It sounds like you picked every coin out on your list from the Smithsonian's collection.

Now, wouldn't you rather have an 1904-S PCGS SP68 Barber Half ?
