Need advice on home safes

astroratastrorat Posts: 9,221 ✭✭✭✭✭
Hi folks-

There was a recent thread that cast come doubts on the how "safe" Sentry brand home safes are for storing coins. So, for those who really know what they are talking about, would you please recommend some solid safes for storing coins at home?

Lane

P.S. Thanks and I realize that this would also fit well in the open forum, but the best responses lately seem to come from this forum.

  • Well, first off is your collection worth enough to you to invest in a safe? They can be quite expensive.

  • The concern with Sentry safes is that they hold moisture in the walls for fire retardency. For security, you might look at gun safes. http://www.libertysafe.com/

As a general rule, safes can be very dangerous. If there is enough value in them
then thieves will find a way to open or remove them anyway. Worse is that if it's
known you have a safe they may force you to open it.

If you have a safe be sure it's well anchored, purchased from a reputable dealer,
    and is not known about.

I have a sentry safe, but its small. Its very well hidden, anchored, and I open about 5 times a week to release vapor. My coins have stayed there for about 4 years now and have had no harm. If your collection is very valuable...I would suggest a gun safe with dehumidifier. Liberty makes a sturdy safe. Still, dont let people know you have one...or like said before...you may be forced to open it!

I have had a Meilink safe for about 20 years and love it! No coin problems at all!!

Look in the Yellow Pages under Safes. Details sent via PM.
  • My advise is always the same...........Don't buy a safe .......rent a safety deposit box! image

Actually, the concern with Sentry safes is that they can be opened in about five minutes by someone with a handful of tools and a little bit of knowledge (a fellow forum member PM'd me with the step-by-step info on doing this, and it's frightening how easy it sounds).

Personally I prefer safes to safety deposit boxes. Just insure your coins well. Remember, banks can get robbed too!
I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

Safes only work once for burglary.

Once a felon knows about your safe, they come back with a gun for a robbery.

A gun safe is fine. AND....you can keep GUNS in it too. They are very reasonable and will prevent you from becoming a victim of the lawsuits that are filed constantly on guns stolen and used in crimes.

A safe deposit box is better for coins. But there are times when coins are ...home...and that's when the safe makes a dinner date feel .....better. (no puns, now)

Also good for cameras, sterling flatware, all the stuff that kids break in to steal.

    A good item to have.

Also necessary if you own ......SILVER.....as the stuff is just too bulky for a SDB.
