Did any of you lucky dogs who attended see any high grade raw coins? What was the % of raw to slabbed coins at the show? Thanks!image

  • Most anything that would have a chance of getting slabbed was slabbed - Raw stuff was mainly "album" coins, though I did see some nice raw large cents, though I didn't look at them long enough to determine if they had any problems.

Tom Reynolds, early copper specialist, had a case full of fabulous high end material, all raw, just as he does at every show he attends. Ditto Tony Terranova, though his were primarily colonials.

The exhibit at ANR's case - an extraordinary all raw set of large cents, was the finest copper in the room - along with Jim McGuigan's complete slabbed Half Cent collection and a couple of individual pieces, like Legend's PCGS MS65 ChainCent.

I would guess slabbed to raw overall was about 90/10.

There were a few , but most were not holdered for a reason. I was looking for a few raw pieces for fellow collectors back home to fill albums and found a lot of sub-par quality coins (damaged, cleaned) being offered.

I agree, the one area that I saw a lot of nice coins that would holder easily but were being sold raw were the three major copper dealers present. They were some really nice pieces for sale raw that were simply outstanding. My guess is that many copper dealers/collectors like having coins raw and the EAC folks dont grade copper in line with the current TPG's opinions anyway, they are much tougher standards.

while i saw some raw stuff and looked at what appealed to me or was on my search list, pretty much all i saw was problematic. many had "color" problems, hairlines, rim dings weak luster from over-dipping and other deficiencies that may have kept them out of holders or resulted in a lower grade. another aspect of meeting other members are the confidences that are shared. i've heard enough horror stories to assume that when it looks like a duck, well, you've heard that little ditty already!!!! suffice as to say that unless you're sure about your knowledge within a series and in general about surface condition and games that get played, it can be hazardous to lay out the big dollar on a raw coin. while slabs aren't immune they offer at least a modicum of protection. i firmly believe that much of those have been tried with the majors and come back in a bag or holdered low and cracked.................. even by the big guys we think we should be able to trust. money and it's resultant fallout, greed, do strange things to people when they're dealing with strangers.
