For you copper gurus out there, I came across....

...these while continuing to sort through my sparkletts bottle of lincolns. This is on a 1992. With my 16x loupe it appears the lighter region is raised slightly. Also the date appears to be doubled slightly but I am not certain. Trying to get a scan of the date to show what I'm seeing in the loupe. Ideas? image

  • Some kind of strike doubling? Is is evident anywhere else on the coin? on the reverse?
  • It's not any type of doubling, it's just the thin copper plate being stretched till the zinc under it shows. This is quite common and I see this all the time, even on proofs.
  • Here is some similar areas on the reverse. imageimage

There is also evidence of the same alongside the west side of the memorial on the reverse. Just inside the O in One at the 12:00 position as well.
  • Here's another oddity. What's going on with the 6? This coin is in excellent condition for being 44 years old and residing in a sparkletts bottle for who knows how long. These scans don't do it justice. When my son pulled it out of the bucket, he was looking for the AM on the reverse since it looked like a 2000-2003 coin. Lots of luster and nice honey tone.

  • Another one. This is on a 1999-D in BU condition. Definietly something in the die since it is raised above the surface of the coin.

  • On the former, a question for the copper gurus... is this simply caused by the outter copper layer being to thin, thus a Mint Defect, and not really an error?

On the latter, just looks like a die chip in the loop of the 6... not uncommon, I would think...

1992-D has had the copper plating stretched enough to reveal the zinc.
1960-D has a die chip in the date.
    1999-D has a clash mark.
    1993-D has a gas bubble.

None of them are worth more than their 5-10 cent value as uncs (assuming they're not pop-tops) except for the 1960-D and 1999-D, which are worth about $1 each.

  • Thank you Gonfunko. On the 1993-D, you said it is a gas bubble.I'm assuming you are refering to the pronounced bump in the lower right of the pic. What about the raised ridge (albeit not so pronounced) running from the top right corner to the left and through the "T". There is also a ridge running through the bottom leg of the "E", not shown in this pic is another small raised ridge in the "C" in cent.

I am learning a lot about Lincolns by going through this pile. Searching the forums when I see something different, looking at coppercoins web site etc.. My sons sat here for two hours last night searching through it with me. They had a lot of fun, especially when my 12yr old found the 1960 with the die chip. I'm down to about 10lbs left in the bucket and will probably get through that today

I disagree on the 1999-D. That also looks like a bubble in the plating as well.
