Hmmm...

First reaction: Stupid piece of crap...

...which it is, of course. But now I'm thinking...$4.95? What the heck! Why not, for this beautiful tribute to our great nation's first gold coin!

For those that have purchased gold/silver plated replica coins, how cheesy were they? Total garbage? Any redeeming value?

Yeah, I bought some (plus the $3.95 for the display box).

Gold Bust coins are my favorite (and $2.50 Indians) but I don't own one (it's way down on my MS Type Collection) so I wanted one. I did buy some others to sell on eBay too image

You'll be one the phone with them for about 15 minutes, because after you order they rattle off about 10 other offers. You just wait for them to quit talking and say "No" and they go on to the next offer.

I haven't gotten them yet, but until I own a real one of these, this will have to do.

relayer, was it difficult for you to limit yourself to just ten of these beauties? That crappy box was $3.95, huh? I guess I'll need something to put the damned thing in, I suppose.

I wonder what exactly this "clad"gold layer is clad to. Copper? Plastic? Ritz cracker?

I've gotten 3 phone calls from them (since we have established a "prior business relationship") so look forward to that also. At least they use caller ID so you don't have to answer it.

It will go good with my fake Bar Cent as well.

I'd be a buyer at three or four bucks, I guess. Five is stretching it.

I find the constant use of the word "tribute" instead of "copy" to be disturbing. It reeks of National Collectors' Mint.

In fact, all the signs are there... the quoted price of a real coin (as if that has anything to do with it), the "gold clad" bit, the "strict limit"...

National Collectors' Mint. I'd bet on it.

For the love of God, PLEASE don't send those people any money! Use your $5 to buy a real coin, you'll be glad you did. That crap is not worth the time it would take to throw it away!

  • I have a replica of the 1796 silver dollar, it actually looks pretty good, they made it so that it would look like it had been worn down, like it was minted back then. The quality was nice, strike was good, I had no problem with it, the only reason I thought it was fake was the weight and cheap metal used to make it.image The other one I have I hate, its a 1804 silver dollar. This one had terrible strike, it was proof-like, very cheesy, and on the back it had a big imprint of "COPY" on the shield, very distracting, the other one did not have this. Now if your wondering I did not buy these, I would never buy a coin thats not real unless it was meant to be counterfeit, then I would use it for research purposes. My grandmother got both of them for free from a magazine of some sort, so I guess there not too expensive, but my opinion is to not go with it.

If someone wants to pay five bucks for a replica of a coin that 99.9% of collectors would never have the means to own, I have no problem with it.

Not seeing words like "copy," "replica" or "reproduction," on the other hand, I have a BIG problem with. I also don't like that they are calling this a "coin" at all. "Tribute" seems like a deceptive, mealy-mouthed, weasel-worded way to say "copy" that many less coin-savvy folks may not get. But on the bright side, if they're duped by the deception, they're only out $5 plus shipping. Most less knowledgeable folks who get ripped are out a lot more than that.

And I hope the reverse has the word COPY stamped on it as required by law. [EDIT -- Ah, yes, I see it -- under the eagle on the reverse. I wonder how long until some people try to eat it away with acid and sell it as real! @K! $200,000 coin! PLEASE let me sell it to you for $50! ]
