The only coin I bought was a 2004 Proof 1/4 ounce GAE from the US Mint table. The coin went straight to the PCGS table about 60 ft away. This was more of a currency buying trip. I bought a North Africa one dollar bill and an Educatonal one dollar note.
PCGS Currency: HOF 2013, Best Low Ball Set 2009-2014, 2016, 2018. Appreciation Award 2015, Best Showcase 2018, Numerous others.

  • I'd like to see more purchases so.....TTT
  • I bought this while I was there because the Director of the Mint happened to be signing so I got her on the lid of this Thomas Edison proof coin. She was very nice. Dignified and sincerely friendly.

Here's a list, pictures to come:

    1856-O $10 NGC-55 (very crusty)
    1846/5-O $10 PCGS-35 (very crusty)
    1912 $20 PCGS-63
    A new Zeiss 3x/6x/9x loupe--it's awesome!

    For my son:
    1918/7-D 5c ANACS Net Fr-2
    5 circulated buffalos including 14-S, 16-S, and 18-S
A new loupe with a light
A good bag from the YN Trivia Treasure Hunt

    The intangibles:
A lot of fun with my son ("priceless")
OT-I took him to the Steelers game tonight which he told me was "better than Annie", which is a supreme compliment in my household!image
Quality time with new and old friends (also invaluable)
The experience of seeing some amazing individual coins and sets

In summary, the best reason to go to the ANA is not for what you can get. It is for what you get to see and who you meet and spend time with. Coins can be purchased anywhere, anytime. Getting the right people together in the right setting only happens once a year.

    hey Stuart

i liken the 1878's to a kind-of type set with all the varieties, but it was a difficult decision to buy this coin even though it has some very nice tone and spoke!!!! funny, i now have two nicely toned Morgans, an 1878-S to go with this new coin.

i have now fully unpacked and realize i also bought a raw 1978 Ike and a 1947-S NGC MS66 Phillipine Half-Dollar, more commonly known as a MacArthur half.

  • I had a blast today! I felt confident enough after spending time talking to dealers, witnessing other transactions, and most importantly, talking to the family of forum members (it sure helps to have friends at these events) to strike out on my own and do some wheelin and dealin'. I decided last night that if I was going to bid in the pattern auction this morning, I would have to get rid of some sets I had put together i earlier years, so I toted my Morgans and Lincolns to the show and had at it. When I found out I didn't have to pay for may auction winnings today, I reached for a few extra goodies to fill some gaps in the collection I am honing in on - Barber & Commem halves. Here goes:
Auction wins - a 3 cent silver pattern (Judd-125) PCGS PR63 & 1870 Standard Silver 25c (Judd-888) NGC PR63 Trades/purchases: 1845 SL half no drapery (raw - dealer had it at EF+) 1892-o Barber half ANACS 61 1912 Barber half ANACS64 .........And a bunch of odds & ends that caught my eye in the $4-25 range. Oh, also purchased Charles Daughtery's new book on Lincolns and was fortunate enough to have him write a note inside and sign it, along with "Pittsburgh Aug 2004"....pretty neat! The highlight by far today was taking the time to check out the displays and exhibits presented at the entrance to the show.......quite an assortment of impressive & important coins, along with some Civil War items...a tree trunk with a canonball stuck in the middle (imagine getting hit by that projectile!) and a rifle picked up from the Gettysburg battlefield the day after the campaign. I agree with the other comments about the inferior lighting of the display cases for the 1794 dollar, the 1913 nickel, and the 1866 proof dollar (Dupont) stolen at gunpoint and later found in a non-collectors "junk-box". Very difficult to get an eyeful of any of those coins. Since I live about 20 minutes from the convention center, I will probably stop back for a couple of hours tomorrow....I'd like to pick up some PCGS wooden cases, and other supplies. For those of you outta-towners, this afternoon proved that the sun really does show it's face here in Pittsburgh every few days! Actually it turned out to be a very pleasant evening for those who put in 3 long days on the bourse..hope everybody got outside this evening and enjoyed the fresh air. My lovely wife coaxed me into a brisk 3 mile "walk" at the local high school track when I got home, or I would have posted sooner (plus 'em Stillers wuz on TV). Pictures to come soon - I'm hitting the hay for now.
Don't you know that it's worth
    every treasure on Earth
    to be young at heart?
And as rich as you are,
    it's much better by far,
    to be young at heart!
