Another ANA report

Just got back last night after midnite. Had a great week. Saw some amazing sets and individual coins.

Cardinal's beautiful collection has a new AU58 1794 dollar included.

Got to hold the King of Siam set - beautiful 1804 dollar!

Saw the Arizona Collection of seated liberty dollars. A very nice set in the AU to low MS range put together by a collector with a very good eye for quality. It will be in auction next spring and I highly recommend many of the coins. Prepare to pay for the next grade up in many cases!

Saw the half cent set [see thread in the Set Registry Forum].

Had a great time in the Grading Finals.... neat coins this time!

Set Registry luncheon was fun and informative. Thank you PCGS for the beautiful storage box!

Sat thru the JFS Collection sale and waited around for the lots I was interested in. They finally went off after midnite and I feel I got good deals. Bought three coins - the last Gobrecht I needed for my set and a couple of proof dollars. Had a good ol' time rooting for Bruce Scher to win a few great commems for his set.

Met some great people from the boards. Thanks for stopping by and saying 'hi'!

Nice report TDN. Any info on your dollar set display? How was it received? That must have been fun.

A few people stopped by and spoke about the set, but frankly it kind of got lost in the crowd a bit.

That's a shame. It's one of the world's finest sets of coins and it got lost among 20th century sets and proof moderns? In fact the set is nearly impossible when you think about it. One could not have fathomed such a set 15 years ago. Let along a gem 1873-cc dollar by itself. Yet a pop 1 1932-d quarter or MS 66 FBL 1953-s Franklin half will get more press. Hey, but at least you got to fondle the KOS 1834 proof set.

Man, that must've been an experience.

Did you get to see the original case, too?

Baloney! image TDN is being modest. The set was the talk of the show. There may have been more valuable coins and sets but nothing cooler. No way!

One unsung exhibit in the exhibit area was a high grade complete set of $3's (54-D in original AU-55, some of the better dates in MS-65 and some proofs). It was a very nice unheralded set.

I saw the set and was floored. The coins were superb. I was most taken by the 72-S. The color is exactly what I would order if I could specify toning. What a great coin.

I would love to have been there, if only to see the King of Siam set!!
    Thanks for the update, TDN!

No, they didn't bring it along.

DHeath: The 1872-S is ex: Jack Lee. I already had the Eliasberg coin when I acquired that particular specimen as part of the Share Collection. I agree that the color is gorgeous. The Eliasberg coin had been dipped white, so I chose [IMO] the more eye appealing of the two to keep for my set.

TDN - I don't know how many people stopped by, but I was one of them. Very nice coins! Thanks for bringing them to the show. And BTW, congrats on winning the World Series!

    Then why bother.

Because the coins themselves were cool.

KOS set raw in the presentation holder, coolnest factor 9.9 out of 10

set in slabs with presentation holder, coolness factor 6 out of 10

slabs no holder 3 out of 10 they're now just some nice coins in a bunch of slabs and there are a bunch of nice coins in slabs all over the place.

Any 'original' 1804 dollar: coolness factor 10.0
Any bust coinage proof: coolness factor 8.0

Raw, in official case, unable to get a close look: been there, done that [at Mandalay Bay]. In PCGS holder and able to hold in my hands for a closeup look: image

Guess it's all a matter of individual perspective.... image
  • I read the report. Sounds like a lot of good action..

Congrats TDN on winning the World Seres and a special thanks on behalf of all the young numismatists who will benefit from your generously donating the $5000 price.

No matter what price range you collect in that is a substantial sum and a generous gift.

conder101: I must disagree with you. I asked the good folks to let me see that President Andrew Jackson gold medal in my hands. They did.

I was enthralled!!! A medal issued my the US Mint IN GOLD!! Sure it was in a PCGS slab. Coolness factor 20 out of 10!!!!!!!!

It allowed me to securely hold the medal without fear of dropping it or fingerprinting.

Would you believe I never looked at the grade of that medal? What an awesome medal!!!
I never even asked to see that 1804 silver dollar?????? A dime a dozen in comparison!!!!!!!!!!

I must also state for the record that TDN is all collector! Dealer? Nah.

He is on the same "kick" that all other collectors are on. To collect what pleases him. We are very fortunate that he is willing and able to share with us.

By the way, how could such a set of seated dollars be "lost in the crowd?"

TDN graciously allowed Seth and I to examine any of the seated dollars in person we wanted. They are wonderful coins!!! I have my favorites which are not TDN's favorites. he really loves that 1848 and 1849 as I recall.

Something else very interesting; I detected no boastfulness or ego coming from TDN, at all. He is really a modest fellow who happens to love what he does. Collecting. Period.

    Hey TDN,

What do your dollars and "Demi" have in common? image

And, did you do "that" w/ the KOS coins?
