A brief ANA show report/recap....

This was just my second show on my own again, and my perspective is one from having worked out of a briefcase rather than from behind a table.

Overall, activity seemed to be extremely busy, though certainly not wild, as I have seen on some rare occasions in the past. The great looking and/or especially rare coins that so many seem to be seeking, were (like always?) very strong. But, as is often (always?) the case, some nice quality, appealing material could be had at reasonable levels. It took a lot of digging and a bit of negotiating, but I was able to acquire some quality pieces at perfectly comfortable price levels.

It was a similar story with the auctions - many of the special pieces brought eye-popping/hard-to-fathom prices. However, a number of would-be sellers who apparently placed “shot price” reserves on their (in-some-cases ordinary) consigned items, were likely disappointed and ended up buying back some of their coins.

It was extremely easy for me to sell my inventory in Pittsburgh - I brought close to 60 coins and sold approximately 90% of them. I also sold close to half of the new material I acquired there. It got to the point where I literally quit showing/offering my inventory, so that I could make sure I brought some of it home to offer to my clients.

It was a great and enjoyable show for me - business was excellent and I got to meet and visit with a few forum members I had not met previously. Regretfully, there were a few others I had hoped to run into, but did not.

If I had not missed my connecting flight home last night and not had to stay overnight, here in Houston, it would have been an even better show.image

Thanks for the excellent update Mark. Your sentiments tend to show a stronger show that the auctions indicated. I'd be interested in seeing what you were able to pick up reasonable. Maybe you finally found that "just right" gem bust half I've been looking for.

I was sort of surprised at the number of sold auction coins that realized rather low prices, in many cases around blue sheet. A few of the Benson coins reappeared in the JFS sale. Some brought more and some brought less. It should scare the average buyer to know that the 1861 NGC PF67 JFS quarter brought only 66% of it's previous auction appearance in Jan. 2002. Just goes to show how important it is to buy the right coin at the right price. Not every coin does well regardless of where/how you acquire it. Minute differences in quality as well as the plastique surrounding the coin all factor in. Just highlights how easy it is to get your head handed to you. Of course the location of the sale, market timing, and who is present at the bidding are huge factors too.

On the other hand the JFS 1854 25c in MS65 brought a whopping $23K against a $6300 CDN bid. You can bet the owner made out nicely on that coin. Obviously at least 2 bidders thought the coin was a strong 66.
