Software for your collection?

Hi, new to the message board.

I was wondering how you all keep track of your collection. I am a big computer dork and I have looked at some of the software available, some of them look very nice, but I thought I would ask opinions before I plunk down my hard earned cash. I thought about making my own spreadsheet or database but that could be very time consuming.

Thanks in advance.

image No software here. I believe in keeping good records, the old fashion way, paper files. Reciepts, Date of purchase, amount paid, from whom purchased, so forth. Even photos if possible for referance. You have chosen the best place to be for coin collecting knowledge. Enjoy and have fun. image

I have used Coin-Elite for many years and really like it. It is available from Trove Software.

  • A good notebook or ledger works well.
No batteries, no electricity, no hard drive to fail.
Use permanent ink, that way it is still good if it gets wet and you have to dry it out.

Buuuuutttt. . . Microsoft Excel works really well. If your ambitious you can add macros for data entry and such.
Remember lots of backups. You never know when that virus gets through or you have an HD failure.
Of course it's also easy to setup a PersonalOracle or MySQL database and write a program to store the data.
Microsoft Access and Oracle both let you use blobs so you can store the images in the database too.

I use CoinManage 2003, easy to use, allows you to add pics of coins, keeps track of Bullion values, buncha other stuff too.

I use a cheap $10 program...picked of ebay...Someone made it. Its nothing fancy or exciting, but It keeps track of prices, and coins. Easy to sort and less hassal than doin a spread sheet!
  • I don't use one, but, welcome to the forum!image
  • excel spread sheet!!! Assign inventory number to each coin. Assign price paid.

    Excel works just fine.

Just setup your columns with the information you want to capture.

Then make sure to update the spreadsheet with each purchase.

You can hide columns if you need, and make filters for columns to sort your data (if you wish).

    Give it a try

Have used Coin Elite for many years. BUT!

The new version won't run on my new XP machine.
They tell me it's a registry problem.

I think they are having a boat load of problems with the new version.

Very happy with Collectors' Assistant Plus by Carlisle.

Comprehensive, well-supported and regularly upgraded. It costs, but I'd checked the others.

For free, though, Heritage's My Collection can't be beat.

  • NurisExpert, they have a trial version too. It's the best program I've found, it even gives you a current dollar value of the coin.

I use what is probably the same thing as ddbird's ... Collection Master - about $10.00 on eBay, but it is kinda cheesy so I'm looking for something better.

    I use Coin Elite also..
One of the things I don't like about it is that it doesn't accept long file names for inserting your pictures.
I never met a coin that wouldn't fit in my collection.....

How big of a computer dork are you? You could "roll your own" using a Linux Distro, PHP,MySQL or other DB server and apache webserver for merely the cost of the hardware <Pii 300 or better>. Run it on your LAN and later when you're ready let everyone view your collection from the "net".

It's truly funny, no make that truly sad, that people in this day and age are so wrapped up in their own little world that they refuse to try and teach someone else the correct or accepted way of doing things.

    Welcome to the boards!
My 2¢ worth on coin collecting software is use double redundancy. Write it down, create and excel spreadsheet AND use the Coin Collectors Assistant from Carlisle.

Coin Elite version 11.8 is working fine in XP for me. Haven't upgraded to latest price updates yet....image I have a small low grade collection compared to what I read on this site, but it has been worth the price for a low techie type as I am.

Coin Elite 11.08 is a great product. I just wish it would run full screeen.
Once a person uses this program a spreadsheet may not seem as nice.
I gave up trying to get 12.05 to run.

Coin Elite here too. I'm tracking aprox 600 coins & 50 meg of coin pictures with it. Works good but the drop down menu that links the pictures is kind of slow & clumsy. I don't have a clue as to what about ½ the special features do. The Printer Report Designer just blows my mind.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
