While certainly of historical interest, there is really nothing of note to see when it comes to an 1848 CAL 2 1/2 gold piece. Too bad the mint wasn't into special design commemoratives back in 1848. Instead all we get is a counterstamp with unimaginative letters. There was an interesting thread on the topic of how easy it would be to counterfit an 1848 CAL using a non stamped 1848 and placing the coin into a resin hardened mold before doing the counterstamping. This is one coin I would avoid like the plague unless it was in a reputable holder by a service that guarantees authenticity.
