This is pure MADNESS!!!

I might be a little late on this post, but Oh My God!

Crazy

Check out the other low pop '51 Bowman PSA 9's that just ended. They went nutty too.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

This has been the case for the past 2-3 years now. A recent large find of literally hundreds of PSA 9s and dozens of PSA 10s from this set has re-ignited the furor, causing John Branca's coveted #1 position to be in jeopardy. As Branca has probably spent well northwards of seven figures on his journey on this set - he has been fairly protective of his set rating over the past few months. I think in the last 9 months or so, he has increased his overall set rating from 8.7 to 8.79. There are many others now closing the gap - and it will be interesting to see how everything plays out. I'm sure Branca will remain #1 - but I don't think he will be passive in letting others make the set be more competitive.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

The intriguing thing about that auction is that the #2 & #3 bidders are legitimate collectors, both with very formidable bids. It wasn't one of those deals where the third highest bidder was at $1,000.
  • Not sure what the population in NM/MT is, but this copy could have gone either way. It is an extremely difficult card, however, that is rarely seen with centering any better than the listed copy. This card eluded me when I was in my Brooklyn Dodger collecting phase from 1992-1998. 4k is steep, but sometimes you just get sick of looking and feel like "That's as good as it is going to get...I'll bite." Brooklyn collectors tend to have deep pockets and love their "BUMS".

Marc -- What do you know about Spence's 1951 set? He isn't on the Registry at all.

Who is Spence? Is that Quality F? I don't always remember his name. I don't know much about him - other than he is from the South (think Texas, not Florida...) and black gold tends to pad wallets for hobby-related endeavours.

Isn't des1728 the eBay ID for Don Spence? He's ruthless on Goudeys and many other high-end sets.

Along the lines of Vargha's question...I'm thinkin' that Bruinkid75 (the underbidder) is the ebay handle for John Branca.
