SCAMS - How does one protect themself?

Being new to coin collecting I've been doing a lot (or alot haha) of reading here in the forum? It seems every day I come across threds about ebay scams. Some things just shout SCAM...like a brand new ebayer w/ no feedback selling a very rare coin worth $11,000. But then there are times when someone with an 2 year old ebay account, limited (but positive) feedback as a buyer is selling a coin. (See link) As a new coin collector that doesn't scream scam. I've been making notes of any scams posted on the forum, but that is only of limited help seeing that once a ID is used to scam the scammer probably won't return to that ID. Could someone shine some light on what to look for when it comes to ebay scammers? Thanks a lot.

    Welcome. And the third word would be education. And this forum is a great place to learn for a while. Once you become more acquainted with the field of play you'll be able to spot most scams quickly.

    If you are new to coin collection the best way to avoid scan is to work on your knowledge of what you are collecting. Books are a good investment that will repay for themselves time and time again. Another source of good information is the ANA. Their library is the most comprehensive in the country. ANA members can check out books for free, all you pay is the shipping.

    Posting questions on this forum is another great source of coin data. Post your questions and most of the time you have a good honest answer in just a few minutes.

    Learn how to grade coins yourself can keep you from making too many mistakes. Until you can lean to grade coins yourself I would reccomend that you buy coins graded by PCGS, NGC, or ANACS. But be sure to learn to grade your own coins, its fun!! Not all nice coins are in third party holder!!
