Anyone notice the topps Vault auction for the 1984 Topps

THey are selling the color variations used to print the cards.Topps Vault THE card TOPPS card is selling was NOT the card used to help make what we see today. The card they are selling is the "Box" version his entire pic is in the Box. The card issued in packs his head is outside the box. So what are they really selling ? I know this isnt a bid deal but I would be more intrested in the cards used to make what was actualy issued in packs is my point. And I ask this which would you consider to be worth more the one they were going to use but didnt? Or the card they used to make what we see today in packs?

"box" version on ebay Which BTW as of late seem to appear 1 a month as of late.

real topps on ebay

  • That's some facinating stuff. I'm a bit leery of Topps Vault listings as they don't do a good enough job at describing how the proofs listed were used. Are they one-of-a kind, used in production, copies, etc.; "proof" is used a bit too loosly.

I think TOPPS is placing little information as possible in the auction. In My opinion the card they are selling is worth far less then the an actual card used to make what was "packed" out to customers. I was intrested in it til I caught is wasnt the real deal.

  • I thought that a proof was a test print, used for visual inpection prior to production. If so, there would be no specific number or proofs for any one card, just as many as needed, but I think you can be assured that it's a pretty low number regardless, and a pretty cool piece to own.

These should not be confused with plates, which are the actual metal parts used to print the cards and are one of a kind. I see Pacific offering these items on eBay.
