How do you feel about Indian Cents

I love indian cents. I collect them by date and mint. How do you collect them?

I like the common dates in true XF-AU. I think the 1908-S & 1909-S is underrated in every grade.

I have a couple of worn ones but I do want one good type example. Probably a proof. Then that'll be all.

I don't have all the varieties, but once I get the 1909-S, I will have completed my set in full XF/AU (including Flying Eagles sans 1856).

  • Hi Tom,

I'm trying to do the latter date coins [78 - 09S] in gem red or better. Right now I'm about 7 coins short of the 34 coin run. When I'm done with those I'll likewise complete the 59 -65 early dates.

The problem for me arises with those middle date toughies like the 72 and 77. No way I'll be able to do those in 65RD. Don't know yet what I'll do with those if anything as I personally can't get excited about owning XF browns.

The series is so long I can't imagine trying to correct varieties other than a couple of the majors.

I'm working on a proof IHC set. Only 5 coins into it though, a long way to go.

  • I have a whitman folder of about twenty different circulated IHC's from when I first started collecting. The ones in my type set are atleast F-12 and not one above VF-20, but I plan to upgrade them all to atleast EF sometime soon.
  • I would like to get the coins minted during the Civil War soon, but might have an interest in the whole series later when I have more money.

  • The obverse of the Indian cent is among my favorites. Now if the mint could produce a coin with the obverse of the Indian cent and the reverse of the Buffalo nickel, that would be my "happy hunting ground".

Kept the 67, 70, 72, 74, and 75; sold the 77 last winter (too run-down even for me) along with some commons in better circ and lower MS; gave nearly all the rest to my friend's 10 year old nephew.

  • I'm thinking about extending my hoard of Flying Eagle cents to include the whole copper nickel series.

  • I went for " I have a couple of nice examples, but I don't collect them by series " . Some I`ve seen in Mint State or Proof are just beautiful. Morgans are fine but they draw attention away from some of the other really nice coins of the period like the Indians Cents, V Nickels, and Seated Quarters.

  • One of these days I'll get a spectacular toned RB proof in 66 or 67 then I'll call it good. I don't collect copper much. I like silver and nickel better.
  • Indians are cool. I hunt them down with my metal detector, but as far as spend a lot of money collecting IH's, forget it. I can't seem to get past the 1931-S Lincoln. image

Indian head cents are getting stronger in the market. Get the key dates and high-grade commons. I had an IHC 1903 RB MS65 PCGS that sold for quite more than I thought it would and I noticed some ending prices and assume they are on an uphill slope.

From what I can tell and my experience on what I have sold. It was first morgans, now gradually that group of buyers is moving into the IHC category.

I like all the dates before 1887 in VG or better, problem free.

If I had a huge budget I'd collect them in 65/66 RD blast gold, red or orange -- they're absolutely gorgeous at this grade. If I had a smaller budget but a lot of time I'd collect them by variety/error per date. The large mintage and inconsistent quality by the Mint during this era resulted in a lot of interesting mistake coins, enough to fill a set.

I have a complete, circulated set.
  • You forgot the option.

I collect examples of error Indian cents.

I have been working on my IHC collection for a while now, they are my favorite. Trying to get all RD or RB not easy and not cheap. Current PCGS graded coins I have run from AU 50 to MS64 RD, I only have 19 of them but I'm sending 4 more off in a week or so and I think at least 2 will come back 63 or 64 RD. A dealer up in my area is getting a complete raw set in that I think he paid 30K for and will break it up and sell it. According to him it is complete including the 1856, all the proofs, and he said everything else is UNC including multiple key coins. I don't know if I can afford any of them but we will see.
