Oh, my "soon to be" aching back.... Ikes and Kennedys

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,377 ✭✭✭✭✭
So,

I moved recently and it seems to be a good move for my collecting.
At the old branch (BofA), there was a teller who collected half dollars, and some other items he found interesting. He always could get to things before me.
At the new branch, they are literally a NEW branch (still BofA) in a new development....but only 7 minutes away from my house. Being new, they are trying to be super nice.

Old branch said Ikes were no longer able to be ordered.
new branch took my request for $500 bag of ikes on Saturday and I got the call yesterday they are in!

Old branch had teller who cherrypicked the kennedys (I still need a good dozen or so from circulation for my album..and let my boy upgrade it to BU examples if I don't have them yet)
New branch took order on Saturday for $500 box of these as well. They are also in.

So, my back will be hurting tomorrow/Saturday when I go in to get them. I will take a backpack in with me....I think they will be heavy (and yet, I will feel $1000 lighter image ).

Even though it will be monetarily the same, it won't feel like it.

Now, what am I going to do with all the extra Ikes and Kennedys once I grab out what I want??????
Go to the store and buy groceries and pay in Ikes? image

Seriously, what to do with that many? I still have ~200 Ikes from early this year....hmmmm

Neat. Always have 20 in your car and use them for small cash purchases. I can hear the cashiers now "Is this replacing the gold dollar that had no gold in it?"

    << <i>Do a give away. >>

I've done a giveaway before. For BU (just out of the mint bag) 2001/2004 Kennedys.

Not sure circ ikes are worth a giveaway

Heh...I did that with KFC and Sacagaweas last night image

I paid in 7 Sacs for my food. Guy didn't even flinch.
Gal in the cafeteria yesterday (granted, she is Chinese and probably hasn't been in the US that long) thought the Sacs were $0.50 though. My total was $1.10 and I gave her 2 Sacs. She kept repeating "It's $1.10 please"... I told her I gave her $2.00....heh. Well, she got a nice (we were both polite and laughed about it) education image

Let us know when you actually have your hands on the Ikes. I have to
    believe there's a mix-up and you're going to get SBA/Sac mixture.

It would also be interesting to hear what you get in the half dollars.

  • $500 in ikes = 25 lbs
    $500 in halves = 25 lbs

50 pounds.. shouldn't hurt ya too much. image

Cladking - will do. Last time I got $300 from my old branch and they were 100% Ikes

Do you go out to eat a lot? Leave a Sue, a Sac and an Ike for a tip.

  • I spend those suckers.
Although going into a restuarant and paying it in cash makes it hard to keep your pants up. image
    It's still fun.
The halves and Ikes are both fun, so many people have never really seen them.
They all do double takes. Some still think they are valuable and rare.image
I do say that the mint got it all backwards, they should have make the halves a little larger than quarters and the dollars
less in size than a halves.
Right how $20 to $40 in halves or IKE dollars puts a straing on the belt and pants pockets.image

  • You could allow forum members to purchase some of the Ikes at cost or maybe a little more and they pay shipping......?

I know I would probably be interested in that even if they were circulated since I own 0 Ikes image

    I just got a $100 bag of SBA's 1979 P
and found no wide rim coins in there so I have been spending them like crazy.

Stop & Shop cashier didn't know if they were real?
He said "Oh Cool" Then asked the manager if it was ok to accept them.

Went to Wendy's also and Chinese food.

    I love giving them away.

Since i have quite a few from the last time I did this, if anyone wants to do it, I am fine with that.
I don't know how much shipping is or the best way to ship since they are not light.

But, I will keep it in mind (I will likely pick them up Saturday when I can) and if anyone wants to get some, PM me so I have a message about it and I will let you know. Also, let me know how many.

I didn't realize these are so hard for some people to get.

    Update:

Picked them up early. (Today instead of tomorrow).
Haven't had a chance to do more than a cursory look. So far:
100% (500 total) Ikes. They were double sealed in a $1000 dime bag (but, still only 500 Ikes image )
From the Ikes, I have not gone through them all, just looked real quickly. Noticed a PL Ike so I grabbed it. 1977-S (proof)
About a roll's worth of 1776-1976 Ikes that look BU...a couple have problems on their rims though (cladding missing, one has extra (bump) metal. Haven't looked closely
Not sure what is in there yet...when I get a chance, I will look. A couple of terrible looking ones but for the most part, a most excellent grouping image

For the halves....I only have looked at the ends of the rolls so far. 1 had a 1959 Frankie on the end. Haven't done more than that yet.

    Just wanted to give an update.....and, btw....these are H E A V Y !!!!!!

I haven't heard of anyone being able to get Ikes in a long time.

Glad he liked 'em Chris image
    They are heavy image

Remember, that was 1/5 of the Ikes that I got at 1 time (and I also got a like amount of Kennedys at the same time image)

Sliderider...for my bank to do the "special order" it was to get $500 of Ikes (or Kennedys) at once. Otherwise, could only get what they have on hand that customers have turned it (and likely to be "picked through").
I did have a different branch once order the Ikes, they only got 300 in a bag and I got 200 of those.

When I got this $500 worth last week, it was double-sealed from bank of america and was in a canvas bag that had originally held $1000 worth of dimers.

So far, I culled out the really cruddy ones (gunk on them, super beat up, scratched, etc) and have been spending them at McD's, work cafeteria in the mornings, tips at casinos and restaurants, etc. Kind of nice to get some reactions (some people REALLY love them (and some think they are silver dollars, then I try to explain the difference) and some are "ho-hum" about them and just say they are heavy (kid at McD's was like that)).

Overall, I have been having fun spending them as well. I think I still have ~400 in the box or so between the last 2 times I got them.

I really like the idea of depositing them at your old branch. That way the guy who always got to cherrypick before you will get to cherrypick the leftovers.

I am still trying to spend $100 worth of halves I got a month ago. They sure do not go fast a dollar or two at a time. By the way, I only found one '67 half in 200 coins. Was not worth the effort. Were you there cherrypicking the good stuff before me?

  • I usually pick up 2 or 3 50C rolls and search through them.

I have picked out 1 or 2 franklins that way.

It is something fun to do them spend later.

What is really funny is watching people getting messed up couting 50C peices

Some will count $2 worth correctly then the 3rd dollar they count as two quarters.

I also got $5 worth of Sac's one morning that someone left in it
