My ANA Show Report--Thursday, August 19

Today, I arrived in Pittsburgh with my five year old son, Jack, and after a quick lunch in the Strip District, my father, son, and I visited the ANA. This was my first ANA, and my first impression was "WOW!". While the FUN show gets credit for being a show that is equally big and important, my opinion is that the FUN is an overgrown regional show, and the ANA is a top-flight show which rivals any major medical convention that I have attended in terms of scale, presentation, and organization.
Today's visit was for my son, Jack, not me. I visited friends at the Legend table (Steve/EVP, TDN, and Laura), Dahlonega/Gold Rush Gallery, and Doug Winter/Pinnacle. Steve was kind enough to entertain Jack with some beautiful coins. Jack was particularly interested in "Daddy" purchasing the 1903 $20 Proof-65 Cam.
Next, we went hunting for buffalo nickels to fill the holes in Jack's album. We picked up five circulated examples including three earlier S-mint issues.
All along, people were especially nice to Jack, offering freebies left and right. He loved it. One of the better giveaways was a round 135-piece jigsaw puzzle of a 1794 silver dollar.
We then participated in the ANA YN Trivia Treasure Hunt where he received a prize at 15 stations and learned a lot about our coinage and collecting in the process. Thanks to all who participated including board members Julian and RKKay. For completing the treasure hunt, Jack received even more prizes including a new 2003 Redbook, which he insisted on reading on the way home. Cool!
Tomorrow will be my day alone at the show, and I will post again afterward.

Coin collectors/dealers are really great when it comes to kids and coins!!
I'm looking forward to tomorrow's report already!
Check out the Southern Gold Society
Excellent report!! Sounds like you had a tremendous day with Jack. That is a great experience that I am sure that he will remember for a long time.
What did Doug have to say about the Eagle I sold you...Upgrade?

Thanks for the report. I'm sorry that I missed you.
Sorry I missed you. I will stop by #324 to check out your coin tomorrow.
Back to the report...
Another highlight for all of us with the super-rarities on display:
1861-S Pacquet $20 MS-67 (with its own police guard!)
The Dupont 1866 No Motto quarter-half-dollar grouping
And the collections:
The Duquesne Collection of Liberty $20's at the NGC booth
and last, and most impressive, TDN's Liberty Seated Dollar Collection--it was amazing!
Seated Dollars are my fav hands down. To have to spend so much time around that set and not being able to own them is very frustrating. I may have to kill TDN just for the sheer heck of it!
RYK - your son was well behaved. And, he has great taste in coins too! Congrats on your success as a parent!

I like hearing that... I've been on the other side of the story where, as a youngin', I've been treated like crap... It's always nice to hear of the dealers that are nice to the little guy... and it's nice for the little guy to find them
