How do you determine a selling price on B/S/T

I can't remember seeing this topic come up for discussion quite this way. I have listed a few coins for sale there and sold all but one of them. I look at recent auctions, trends, ebay, teletrade and then try to compare the coins I am selling to them and then list them for a little less. I'd rather sell them here to serious collectors and friends then deal with the headaches of ebay when I can. The coin I did not sell was offered at the time for a fair price but recent sales indicate that it would have been sold for 60% of the price recently garnered at the Superior auction and 75% of the price of the last one sold at Heritage.

The reason I decided to bring this up is that I noticed some coins were being offered on the B/S/T in some cases at double or triple of what they were bringing on ebay. Am I being naive here or do others of you try to sell coins here at higher prices then perhaps they would bring on ebay and if so why?

Well for "hot" coins I try to price at current pricing trends plus maybe a little of the future upside for myself. For the more mundane stuff I mostly look to getting my $$$ back. If I get a good price on coin A I smoetimes am more willing to take a bit of a hit on coin B. The overall goal is to at least break even or come out ahead.

The difference is if you buy on eBay most of the time you don't know who you are dealing with, and there are quite a few sellers who are very good at fooling around with the images. Trying to say that eBay is the standard price gauge for the market is absurd. There is so much fraud and nonsense going on eBay that most bidders won't bid more than bluesheet even for nice PCGS coins.

For me, these days when I sell something it is because I have upgraded or I am selling something for someone who isn't very good with imaging. I usually sell right around greysheet ask.

When I used to list occasionally on there I'd price mine in a similar manner to your method and still get people trying to lowball and stuff.

I am considering bidding on a fairly expensive coin while in Pittsburgh after I can view it tomorrow. If I do and if I win, I will have a nice little stash of slabbed lower grade key date material that will go directly onto Ebay. The b/s/t board has turned into nothing more than a forum of ebay listings and a forum where a few people still try to see how many threads they can get on the first page without any consideration for the other users.

I visit it occasionally but probably will just sell on ebay.

Interesting point of view K6AZ, I've had well over 300 transactions on ebay both as a buyer and a seller and haven't regreted but two. Actually I either know, recognize most of the sellers I have purchased from on ebay. After seeing some of the coins and prices offered by local dealers as well as some at FUN its my opinion that to the novice collector he can be just as unfortunate with either dealers or ebay. Every time I hear a dealer say that they sell their crap on ebay and I look in their cases I wonder why they don't exclusively sell on ebay. image

    Goose,
Stop being so negative. It's not like you. image

I buy and sell bunches on the BS&T, and I would much rather sell stuff there than Ebay. I usually (always exceptions) list items for sale on the BS&T at 5-8% below what my Ebay opening bid would be. That's not always, but usually the case.

Really depends on the coin though, and how much time I have for listing items etc.

As far as the coin you listed, IrishMike, maybe it wasn't a coin that the "general" coin collecting population of this board would be able to put a value on.

Oh, and if you're selling it for 60% below current auction realized prices, I'm a short PM away. imageimage

Always try to keep this stuff fun, hear that Goose! image

Whenever I list anything for direct sale on the BST board, I price it at about what I think it would bring if I listed it on eBay. Everything I've ever offered has sold, and usually very quickly.
