Key Date Kennedy Half Question

I'm hoping someone here can tell me something about the 1997S Silver Proof Kennedy Half. I know Russ is the forum Guru on these coins, and might have some insight. I purchased one of these coins from a reputable on-line dealer with whom I've dealt with many times before without problem. I got the coin today and put it with my other Kennedy halfs. It is a raw coin allegedly pulled from a Proof Set. I noticed that it looked slightly different than the other silver proofs. By just looking at the coin it looked like a normal silver proof, but when I look at it under magnification the mirrored surfaces are full of haze, like a micro mottling. This to me distracts from the coin. Is this normal for the 1997 Silver Proofs, or did something happen to this coin and if so what are your opinions. I've e-mailed and asked for a return authorization. Thanks...

No, it isn't normal. The mirrors should be glassy smooth and very deep. All of the silvers are known for excellent fields.

Thanks Russ. The seller gave me a story about returns only if the coin was in his 2X2, but I've searched his web page and can find NOTHING said of the sort. He's agreed to take the coin back though, so I'm not going to argue with him. I agree, these coins should have deep clear mirrored surfaces.

Now if I can only find the 65, 66, 67 SMS halfs with cameo, I'll be set......

I assume you're working on a raw set?
