Price for a bag of Mercury dimes

Can anyone tell me what the going price for a $10 bag full of Mercury dimes, they come from a old bank down town that i do service for,I was going to break it seal and look for types of key coins, but would it better to keep them seal and sell the bag or break it and look for key dates.

Is it worth more sealed?????Or should i break it open, I know nothing about these dimes

Are they original? As in sealed for decades?

If these are average circulated, common date Mercs, they're not worth too much over melt value, which is about 45-50 cents per coin. If there are better dates or these are better than average circulated, it'll be worth more.
  • It a $100 bag, that was a typo in the post

The Bag only has $100 on it and has nothing saying US mint, the bag is stiched across the top,the manager said that what the bank did 30 to 40 years ago to seal bags.

(average circulated, common date Mercs, they're not worth too much over melt value)How do i do this, what is the best way to melt the coins and then what, how do you sell it????

I can see the impressions from the coins were the bag has been sitting for years, so it looks like the bottom part could have water damage

Don't melt them -- we just refer to "melt value" so that you know that's what the coins are worth -- at least the value of the silver in them IF you melted them.

It's hard to say what the condition would be. There are a lot of "average circulated" Mercs out there, and almost all of them went out of circulation not long after 1964 -- 40 years ago -- so they could still be average circulated...but then again, they may not be. There's no way to know without knowing what's in the bags...or if they were ever cherrypicked before the bag was sewn.

[EDIT: One more thing...if the bags have been sealed for 30-40 years, how does anyone there know that they're all Mercs? Is there some notation on the bag, or some old bank records to verify it?]
  • I'd buy them if you can get them at a reasonable price........probably just common stuff, but heck.......you never know.
  • Impressions can be seen were the bag is sitting, it shows a nice impression of the dimes, dos anyone have a old US mint bag that dimes were in so i can see if it the same.

It bank cash so there no way to find out if someone has picked out the good coins

Iam going to open the bag and see, what are good dates to look for???????

    Thank for all the help

    regards
    Grant

but the 16d is worth the most in circ condition, let us know the condition

  • Thanks for all the help, you guys have been great.

Spent hours looking, they start at 1917 and go as high as 1944, there are dimes from each year and all are Circulated, but some are very sharp in detail.

I have three 21 and five 21D,some are sharp and some worn heap of 30s and 40s, it had me stuff for two hours i was looking and told my wife that there are no mint marks with these dimes and she said to look on the other side, heap of S and D mints, she smart.

Got a 5 cent peace also that was in the bag, how it got there i have no clue 1899 worn.

It a great start for my Dime collection, I will buy a coin book to place the dimes in and trade the rest for dates that are missing

Thanks agen for all the help,it was fun and iam still looking at all the coins and will report any good finds
  • The (5) 1921-D's could be worth quite a bit depending on the condition (it may cover what you paid for the entire bag). Post scans/pics and the merc guys here can help you with estimated grades/values.

Sounds like some great ones in there, and getting such a run of dates/mints is a great way to get a series started. And those 21d mercs sound great!
