You can't say "Not that rare and way overvalued relative to other coins with similar supply, but always in ridiculously high demand as the key in a popular series and therefore always highly valued and often counterfeited" in two words.

Why step over the dollar to get to the cent? Because it's a 55DDO.

Alot of AU/uncirculated 1909-S VDB's color is streaked, woodgrain or just plain ugly. Coins with nice color may not be so "dime a dozen". Did I say I like this coin?
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

<< <i>i saw at least four at the ANA today and those were coins i noticed without even looking for them. way, way more abundant than some truly scarce coins yet it's popular. i think the issue speaks well for how a price can be driven by hype induced collector demand. >>
But how does being a very popular collector series make it "hype?" It just means more collectors are going after the supply than for other series. I'll agree that relative to other series with similar mintage and numbers of pieces extant, the '09-S VDB's price is off the radar...but demand is every bit as much a factor in pricing as supply, and there are more Lincoln cent collectors than any other U.S. type...probably by far.
So while "overpriced" when compared to other, more scarce pieces, I don't think we can dismiss it as "overpriced hype" if we believe in the market economics of supply AND demand. To me, "hype" implies rampant speculation, and I'm not sure I see that with the '09-S VDB. Its popularity has stood the test of time and withstood many market declines. As the key to what is *always* the most popular series for collectors, its value is well established even if it's not terribly scarce.
