Is there a resident expert here on these coins. It's hard to find any inofrmation on them, but I sure would love to have a few.
Coins, shiny coins!

I've just taken new photos of my AH nickel, this seems like a good place to show them
nwcs: Does your coin have a more vibrant blue color in hand than in those photos? I suspect it does...

..I thought PCGS and NGC weren't slabbing these anymore.

They will slab 'em for a fee!! For a big enough fee, they probably would slab me!!!
You might be thinking of a different hoard. I'm not sure there are any more to slab anyway. The hoard went to NGC. They got good grades so would probably remain in the same holders. Mine got a 65* even with that cut above the FIVE on the reverse.
I don't believe NGC will holder these now if they're presented raw.
*Although I have it under authority PCGS holdered one or possibly two before turning off the switch.

An interesting philosophical conversation. This reminds me of the utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham who willed his estate to his college on the condition that they keep his embalmed remains on display. Bentham slab
When my college philosophy professor tried to visit this display, he was told that Bentham's head had fallen off and was being curated.
Will PCGS slab you and provide curation fees for future generations, or must you send your corpse to NCS for entombment in an NGC slab?
<< <i>PCGS never slabbed these*. It's one reason the "hoard" ended up with NGC. >>
Braddick -- Thanks for clearing it up. I always believed that these nickels were too questionable in their toning.

<< <i>This coin is one of a hoard known as the "Appalachian Hoard" and it covers nearly all the War nickels. I own several of these coins, as do a number of other Board members. I believe the toning is real and I have successfully crossed these into PCGS holders. My coins were NGC MS67* coins and are awesome. The initial selling price was about $225-$325 per coin, so, this seller stands to make an enormous profit at the Buy It Now price. >>
The coins that I purchased were from Andy Kimmel and I was fortunate enough to be able to go through all of these coins, that he had, before they were offered for sale. This was because I was at his table on Dealer Day at a Baltimore show and he walked over to NGC to retrieve his freshly graded coins. We sat and talked for about an hour while I went through each one and picked out the best.

purchased on ebay, both in late 2001.
One thing I find interesting is the toning on the reverse shown below. It has sort of a
textile pattern, and I've seen multiple coins from this hoard with a similar look. Perhaps
a clue as to how they came to be?
Ken
P.S. I would be interested in purchasing other dates of these coins!
<< <i>I think FrattLaw is thinking about those neon purple and blue proof nickels >>
Ah, no. The proof coins were the Marty Hoard. I was talking about this Hoard. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Andy Kimmel is out of Milwaukee, WI. And Milwaukee is about 90 miles from Chicago? Why were these then called the Appalachian Hoard? Anyone know the "story" behind these coins? And like I've said before, anytime someone has to tell me a story about how a coin happened to tone in a certain way that I've never seen before, my AT antenna go up.
