Lucky sixpence?

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a lucky sixpence for her shoe.
Why is a silver sixpence considered lucky? Is one Monarch luckier than another? A non-collecting friend is gaining a son-in-law and asked about the sixpence tradition. Can someone enlighten me?
Thank you!
