Rex, appears on many old Spanish and English coins (including coins that circulated in the U.S.). I believe it is the Latin word (or a derivative) for "King".

Since it is on a foriegn coin, no wonder it took so long, almost everyone assume it is on a US coin. I have a foreign name that no one would get.
