I hope this isn't a dumb YN question

Hi,

I've been reading threads for a while now and have a question about 2 things. What is a "top pop" and a "pop top"? Where I live we always call the tab on a pop can a pop top but I figure it must mean something about coins too so what is a top pop?

Thanks

  • They are referring to the population for a given coin in a given grade. If you have a top pop, then you have the highest graded coin or tied with the highest graded coin for a particular year and denomination to have been graded so far.
  • " Top Pop " and " Pop Top " mean the same thing. It`s about the current number of coins that has been slabbed ( like from PCGS, NGC, ANACS .... etc ) and is the highest grade or highest currently known grade. The highest number offered is obviously 70 whether it`s a proof or mint state coin.

Top Pop shouldn't be confused, as it sometimes is, with the errant term finest known. it just refers to the highest coin graded by XYZ Service for a particular issue.

    That's an important point.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

A "pop top" is indeed the thingie off a soda can, as mentioned by Jimmy Buffet in the Margaritaville song:
<< <i>I blew out my flip-flop Stepped on a pop-top Cut my heel had to cruise on back home >>
Such a pop-top is more commonly referred to by those of us in the metal detecting fraternity as a "pulltab", which is pronounced @#%*).

A "pop top" is also a kind of camper.

Some slabhappy coinpeople just get their terminology screwed up. A "Top Pop" coin would be at the top of the population (i.e., finest known).

    ... and keep asking questions.

I started collecting when I was 10 back in 1976.

Since you are 10, have your dad check out the various topics and information this board has to offer since he'll be doing the buying. There are a lot of scams, counterfeits, coin doctors, and shady 3rd tier slabs out there. In the 1980s my dad bought me a bogus 1916-D Mercury Dime. It's important that you AND your dad learn about what to look for and what to stay away from. More importantly, don't grow up to be a Red Sox fan. They'll bring you nothing but sorrow. image

Oh I definitely noted it, and I was very careful to use the past tense. You are no longer a "Dumb YN". . . .You're older now. image
