Q. David Bowers new Morgan Dollar Redbook Review

I am half finished with Q. David Bowers new Morgan Dollar Redbook. The book is well written, but poorly edited. I have found multiple errors in the book that should have been caught by the editor.

Anybody else reading or read this book that would care to comment?

  • I got sorta bored with it. I also didn't like the countless errors in pricing, a few bucks off here and there no biggy, but to say a common dated MS-65 is worth $1000 is a bad editing.

Yes, and their aware of the mistakes. One that comes to mind is the pricing of the 1879 Morgan $. As with any price guide that is over 30 days old, it would be outdated anyway. If another printing is made, I hope it is offered in the wire binder. Mine has already came apart. I think it is a great source of information on the Morgan dollars though. image

  • If you are already a master of the series or looking for a true price guide or an investment guide, I would say this may not be the book for you. I, however, very much enjoyed it. I loved the year by year histories and the general information about the series and the times. That is the kind of coin stuff I am interested in so it was right up my alley. I plan to buy the other books in the series as they are published.

I just bought it, and plan to start reading it this weekend. Helpful to know that there are "pricing errors" in the book, as I would not have known different.
  • Unfortunately I got bored with it about half way through. I already have the VAM book and that is a masterpiece, IMO. Any book on Morgans has to be compared to Van Allen's book and the Bowers book is nothing special, again IMO. Seemed "rushed". Bowers is a great author but I hope he isn't rushing books out the way some popular authors do.

I noticed that the Redbook publishers are about to release a type set book. Now that could be interesting...not many of those books around.

Dave is, in fact, working on a Type Set book. He is doing a whole line of "Redbooks" on various sets- the Double Eagle book is supposed to be shipping from Whitman in the next week, and we will start shipping them from here the day we receive them. If you read the back cover of the "Redbook of Morgan Dollars" it lists the coming titles in his series.

  • I'm really enjoying it. I'm on 1894 right now. This book is typically excellent writing by David Bowers. I recommend it.

I am, however, disappointed by the editiing errors.

But, I've already ordered the double eagle book image

  • I read in rcc that Tom DeLorey is working on the Liberty Seated Coinage book for this series.

I very much doubt it is intended for the same market at all. Anyone who is serious enough about Morgans to plunk down a hundred bucks, or whatever it is, for the VAM book and sit down and read it, probably is not going to find all that much use in the Morgan Dollar Red Book.

I imagine that the MD Red Book (and the rest in the series too) is intended for more mass market appeal. I don't collect Morgans but want to know a little more about them so I found the book very good for my purposes. I imagine a lot of casual collectors of the series would too.
