Question about submitting a doubled die

seanqseanq Posts: 8,652 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have a pretty nice 1960-D Small over Large date cent I'd like to submit for grading. I was originally going to send it in as part of a Mint Error submission, but then I noticed it has its own coin number in the registry. Does that mean I can submit it on a regular economy order with that coin number and it will get graded?

Also, short of calling customer service, how can I find out which other CPG doubled dies PCGS will recognize by using the Mint Error service? I have a 1980 Lincoln Cent DDO I'd like to get into a holder as well.

Thanks,

Sean Reynolds

I have been successful in submitting proof small over large date cents when there has been a coin number available. Seems to me that if a coin number exists, you are good to go.

Not sure of other CPG doubled dies like the 1980

Aren't doubled dies considered varieties and not errors?

Not all of them! If they have a number for them, then you can submit under regular or economy services. I used it for my Doubled Monticello!

I was wondering a little about that, too. I have a 1964 cent with a very nice DDR (the big one for the year, I believe) but it has no coin number. So I wondered if it would be regular grading or error grading.

Doubled die coins are mint errors, not varieties. Varieties are often not graded by PCGS. Many mint errors can be submitted and attributed by PCGS. Varieties take alot of tooth pulling to be recognized, ie. 98-00 Wide AM Lincolns.

Then why aren't they noted as "Mint Error" on the label?

Jeremy - PCGS recognizes the 1945 DDR you posted as a variety (it's listed separately in their pops report) so they put the Variety label on it. If they don't recognize the variety, like the 1865 DDR below, they put the Mint Error label on it -- sometimes even with the FS variety #! It can be very confusing.
