Mid 1970's and up prices: new certs vs. old certs

Based only on ebay sales, I've noticed that in issues I collect or at least are interested in there seems to be a disparity in pricing based soley on how 'new' or 'old' the slab is, especially in relation to modern cards. Newer cert numbered modern cards seem in demand and consistent in winning bid $$$$ while older examples often lag behind. I've noticed this with 1984D star cards as well as others and am wondering if this is the same with other years, from say 1975 and up.

There's been spirited debate on the '0' series slabs vs. more recent ones - but I don't want to get into that with this post. I just want to know if any of you notice significant price variations based soley on how old/new the cert # is for modern cards you deal with.

As high profile examples, do you see the same money paid for a PSA 9 or 10 of 1980T Rickey, 1982TT Ripken, 1975T Brett, or a 1978 Murray with a 02xxxx cert # vs. a 119xxxx cert #'d card, everything else being equal? What about commons and other stars in these years in these same grades?

My guess is that older cards, say pre 1970, this becomes less apparent. Your thoughts?

Also, in another 5-10 years when more of this modern stuff will find it's way into holders, will the older certs #'s continue to take the beating that I'm seeing?

  • i think the perception (and IMO an accurate one) that the older or zero grades are graded FAR more leniently than the grades PSA assigns nowadays.
as for the future who knows, could PSA standards get tougher?
