62 Football Bucks Grading

I was just on the pop report and noticed that there is now a listing for these. There may have been one for some time but this is the first that I have seen it. These were issued as inserts into packs and I believe that they were folded. There have only been a handful graded with the highest grade a PSA 6. How does PSA hand this that theu were issued folded? Any comments?

Fuzz - I would think because of the fold, that you couldn't recive anything higher then a 6...jay

I would hope that PSA would not grade down based on the fold. They don't for 1955 Topps Doubleheaders. IMO if an issue had to be folded in order to fit in the pack, then PSA should ignore the fold and grade based on the rest of the item (centering, corners, print quality). If a FB Buck looked pack fresh, it should get higher than a PSA 6.

P.S. They apparently do the same for Baseball Bucks as there are none higher than PSA 5. Strange policy. I can almost see the grader looking at the item under a 10x loupe thinking "This looks pretty nice, good color, nice edges, perfect centering...huh?!?...Oh my God, look at that crease!!! PSA 2."

    Hey Fuzz,

I've never seen any without a fold, and I don't think they were issued any other way. I'd bet that someday PSA will change their mind on how they grade issues like these. I'd put them back in "the vault" and wait a while ... to see what happens.

It just wouldn't make sense to have entire sets that couldn't ever grade past a 5 or 6 because of the manufacturing process used.

  • The Doubleheader is a great example of why I believe that above 6 should be possible. If you can hand cut some because they came on a box, etc.
It is in the BB bucks that the mystery deepens a bit. BB Bucks came in their own pack with card board backing. I do not believe that they were folded so should be able to grade higher. They are very fragile paper and can that account for the whole down grade all the time ?

    Fuzz,

They were folded. The pack is not big enough for the buck to lay flat. It must have been folded around the cardboard piece.

  • Thanks for the insight Bob. I admit that I have seen a pack opened and remember the card board but not how the buck was in since it was at least 10 years ago and my memory isn't what it used to be. I will do some digging at PSA and let you know what I find out.
    Thanks,

Here's a card that is completely folded in half that I submitted to PSA and received a PSA 7:

    JEB,

Nice card. I like the way PSA slabbed this with the card open. I wouldn't have guessed they'd have done it that way, but it's a great idea.

  • Bob,

When I sent it to PSA for grading, I wasn't even sure that they'd grade it. I was shocked when I received the card in the tall boy slab. I really like the way it looks this way and I would have never thought that they'd do this. I love it! I'm still looking for an equivalent example of the 1970 Topps Scratchoffs Stargell. I have many, but none that would grade PSA 7 or better, and I can't imagine many grading better from what I've seen. In fact, there's only one 1971 Aaron that is also graded a PSA 7 with no others graded higher. For 1970, there are none listed in the Pop Report, although I'd assume that several of the '71s may be mislabled. So, I basically have one of the two highest graded Topps Scratchoffs, both PSA 7s! image

  • As usual JEB is correct. I did receive a mail back from Joe stating that they did account for the issued as folded in the grade. The main problem he mentioned was centering. It is true that centering is awful on many of these. I also believe the paper stock is very soft and subjst to dings and the like. But that does say that a "high grade" set (8 or better) is possible.

Did you ever doubt me? Just wondered ... I still fear you! image

I'd like to see a scan of any "Topps Bucks" (baseball or football) in a PSA slab. I have one raw one, and I've seen many others ... always way OC. Good luck!
