Who collects the older double mint sets

I started to do it, but they just did not hold my interest. When the prices went WAY up, I sold all but one set that I had.

I have collected the Proof sets for each year since 1950 however. All of them are in the original mint packages except for the 1950, which is a hand picked set. An old collector took the best coins he could find from five sets and gave them to one of his kids. Who promptly sold the coins for the cash. There are not any cameos in that 1950 set, but they beautiful original coins with some nice toning.

trying to find nice ORIGINAL double mint sets is a MUTHA...........

I've managed all but the 51........... I bet I've returned 3-4 for every one I've kept because some knuckleheaded, plastic collecting, registry point collecting, upgrade seeking SOB had to break up a set with an original issue of 6-10K.......

Sorry folks, but to me these sets deserve to be kept in original packaging like GSA dollars and 6 pc. cherrywood sets

Yes, the slabbing business has ruined a great many mint sets. It really piques you off when you find a nice, orignal set with one coin missing because it could got sent to the slab company and came back worth more than the rest of set put together.

Finding a nice original - nicely toned set - of any year - is REALLY REALLY hard!

All the mint sets that I've looked at usually have a dudd in them. Some really nice coins with one that doesn't come to par with the others. Most of the time its bag marks.

I hoarded these in the early 90's. Even then, original sets were tough and the 40's-early 50's were all picked over or put together. Have more than a a few nice 54-58's though . K

Lots of nice double mint sets left but it takes a little work finding them. I was just at a local auction which had a nice 51 set with matched toning and if I had the extra cash at the time I would have bought it. The one thing I have realized about these double mint sets is that the original owners or their kids have many of these sets yet and they can still be found at the local level. mike

I have the full run, in original mailing envelopes. On average, I've had 'em over 25 years.

Much of what's available today seems to have been picked over, so don't expect any 53S FBL Frankies (sorry Lucy)!

Double MInt Sets are one of my favorites, I have several of each from 55-58, some with awsome toning. These sets need to be kept in orginal packaging, I have been tempted to have a few of the nicer ones slabbed, but have resisted the temptation and will keep them orginal. They are tough to find in my area, (North East Georgia).

I used to collect Double Mint Sets. A while back they went up significantly, and I sold all but two. I do still have a lot of partial mintsets from which I plucked some mighty nice Franklins. I have two left that I plan to bust up as well.

longtimecollector and toners.....So you want to keep these sets original with the beautiful toned coins in them? Don't come crying to me when these coins eventually toned an ugly brown color. The sulfer in those sets are still toning those coins and could tone them dark at some point in the future.

My experience has been that it's a crap shoot....best guess as to when to pluck them out.
