Flew out for the pre-ANA auctions. It was good to see the usual suspects (Boiler78, RKay, Snow, Blay, Lustig, Schweitz, Angel Dee, Laura, Ed 62 and others).
Previewed the auctions. Was impressed with several IHC's. The Bowers sale had a 1868 MS66R that brought around 40K as did the 1869/69, also MS66R. There were a few new faces bidding on the high end indians. I didn't buy anything at that sale but did pick up a nice large size flyer at the ANA sale, P66BN with blue/purple highlights, ex. Kay.
Was blown away by some of the patterns I saw. A new friend had a schoolgirl PCGS 66DCAM that was unbelievable. One of the most beautiful coins I've ever seen! Deep mirrors with blue peripheral toning. The scratches on the holder looked to be 2mm deep to the coins surface. Saw a schoolgirl in 68 RED that was a near match. The 1877 pattern halves were a real treat to see.
Picked up a 1858 LL flyer that a dealer was holding for me....really nice coin.
Took Boiler78, Snow and Blay to the ball game on Sat. The stadium is great, the game fun and the fireworks show afterwards was truly spectacular.
Unfortunately, I'm back at work today and will miss the bourse and Heritage sale......

"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose.

Good update... I heard about the game from Mark. Sounded like a good time. Wish I could have been there.
Interested to hear the story on the 1877 halves...were some "holes" filled in the set for a certain Indianan?

That's what's so irritating. August is a slow month and there's nothing to do here......I'd preferred to have stayed in Pittsville.
I had a chance to preview the Phoenix lots. The 89 is ex-Epstein. A great coin, with the only drawback for me being a non-homogeneous color. I really liked the 91 as it has that coverted peach fuzz effect.
The real gem was obviously the 68. It has the look of a much later dated coin like a 94. I knew this one would realize big dollars.
Some of the later dated 6s were not up to those high standards with some spots and marks. The 1898 in 67RD has a small obverse spot that no 67 should have.
The 65RDs in the dates that I was looking for like 78, 85, and 86 were generally not impressive and didn't hit the reserve.
The 09S in 65RB was really a PQ65RD except for a very light band on the reverse. I think it could go RD on a good day.
Many of the better coins were in green label PCGS holders [no rattlers] and lots of the coins were Eagle Eye photo sealed [old looking photo seals]. I had to explain to the B & M employee monitering me what the photo seal card was for as she watched me remove the rubber band attaching them to many of the coins.
I was sick as a dog and didn't stay for the auction, so I missed most of the fun.
I threw in a few half-hearted bids just to show the auctioneer I was awake but didn't come close to being the high bidder. But when the right coin comes along, watch out
Lakes: You missed the aluminum and copper Stellas. The Al 66 hammered for $77,500, the Al 65 for $75,000 and the copper for $75,000. The alleged J-197 hammerd for $14,500.
In the ANR and Superior sales, the very nice patterns have brought very strong $$. The fairly nice ones have brought strng $$. The average ones have been weak.

I would have loved to own one of those Stella's - not telling which one since only one was worth buying..... They just didn't fit into the IHC set. They were a real treat to see though.
Amazing that someone would buy the unique J197. Just goes to show the power of plastic. Was it PCGS that bought it and then disavowed the attribution?? Did Andy buy it in anticipation of the registry??
Rick, if you sell me the red schoolgirl, you can then afford the 66DCAM. Done deal??

You're certainly welcome to come here and help out. Not slow here.

Tim,
I'd preferred to have stayed in Pittsville.
At least you spelled Pittsburgh correctly in your title. The message boards are batting about .300 with many dropping the critical "h" at the end. As a former PittsburgHer, it bugs me.
