S-VDB fake tells??

while were on the subject, my coin dealer bought a 1909S-VDB in xf and was asking 900.00 or so, knowing I was looking for one, he offered it to me and I passed not beinng slabbed. I guess the next week he sent it to PCGS and they said it was an added S. He refuses this saying, that on the S-vdb, the vdb is different than the 09 vdb, ie. shifted, letterinng, ect. and claimed it was real and cursed PCGS. Anyways he sold it who god knows whom, but my question is on the vdb between the p and s is there some way to tell.

Best Regards,

Jeff

I wouldn't buy any raw key dates from this guy if I were you!
  • without buying the book, because I will only buy it slabbed by a few comapnies, my question is, is the dealer right at all? Did he have a valid arguement?

Ask for a glass of water and someone gives you a sandwich!

  • As I stated earlier, I WOULD NOT BUY IT BECAUSE IT IS NOT SLABBED, back to the original question.

The position or spacing of the VDB makes little difference in an added mintmark coin. It's the mintmark that's at issue here. But to answer your question with a broad brush, yes, each die is different in how the VDB appears, and the die pairs that punched out all 480,000 San Francisco minted VDB cents are well documented. Some are spaced farther apart, some are closer together. Some have the dots closer to the preceeding letter, some have the dots right in between the letters. This holds true for both P and S mint VDB cents. From the reverse alone, nobody can tell the difference between the two.

I still say, though, that the subject here is the mintmark itself, not the shape or spacing of the VDB initials.

My uneducated take is that if it is not slabbed by the "Big 3", it is fake or, at the very least, off limits. I would avoid this dealer in the future.

  • To elaborate on Coppercoins remarks, there are approximately eight different VDB configurations. I think it is Sol Taylor's book that shows them. As Coppercoins stated, the issue is the mintmark and adding it is a pretty old trick.

Sounds to me like you might want to invest some time in a new dealer. That sounds scummy to me. If he was told it was fake, he should have either eaten the loss, found the person that sold it to him, or perhaps resubmitt hoping for a different answer. But to pawn it off on some unsuspecting customer is benieth contempt.
