Anyone try Bowers and Merena Live Auction?

Ringman, or whatever it is called seemed less than user friendly. Not sure if it was my connection, but I have cable and it fell way short of ebay's live auction.

I watched it...very good...prices were high...you have to REQUEST to be logged on...that sucks, but they DO have a really good format once you are on...you can scroll back on all the coins previously finished while watching...and the BID NOW button looked very user friendly...they need to make it accessible to everyone. Steve Deeds told me they would very shortly.

    TDN,

I believe these prices are the final ones.

I think those are final internet prices. There was one lot I listened to live with Laura on the cell phone. It opened and closed [DNS] at a price higher than that shown there.

  • Saintguru,

I downloaded all the files and installed as required. I still found the whole affair troublesome and was not able to bid. Maybe it was just my experience. Sounds like you didn't find it too difficult. Then again, I have a pretty short fuse.

I just called them this afternoon and asked how to view. She told me that you had to sign up in advance (which is stupid) and she did it for me right then. I just clicked and viewed. Go figure???

Thanks for linking the final bids. Interesting. A hot market and yet some coins didn't meet their reserves? The greed of some sellers. image

  • Lava,

I viewed a number of the IHC lots [first page of prices realized for session one] before yesterday's auction and can see why many didn't hit the reserve. It definitely wasn't the nicest group that I've seen. A number of the dates that I need [78, 83, 85, 86 all in 65RD] deservedly weren't bid up. A lot of the 66RDs and even the 1898 in 67RD seemed too marked or spotty for the grade.

Contrastingly the 1868 in 66RD pop 2/0 is a real killer and I can see why it realized big money [$41,400].

IN the Jeff Stanley Lincoln cent proof collection, ONLY 6 of the 17 coins met the reserve! The 1916 went for $21k+ but the 1909VDB didn't sell. I wonder what Jeff and his daughter are going to do now?

I purused the silver type coins and overall this looked like a washout.
Most of the better date seated (and there were dozens of them) did not sell. The seated dollars had lots of better dates and proofs, and nearly ALL did not sell. The coins that did sell as a rule only brought around CDN bid levels. That would tell me that they were average coins in holders. It does look like the owners were on the greedy side. The 1870 dollar in MS64 brought over $8K so that must have been a nice coin. I did note a first gen 1917-P SLQ PCGS MS65 sold for $1380 (had a full head). That's good news to me as I offered a similar piece (PQ, 1st gen, FH, blast white) at a local show last week for $1200 and had no takers. Guess I was at the wrong show. This saved me at least $75. Thanks guys.

I think the auctions have saturated the market a bit. $25M absorbed at NYC and three weeks later they expect $50M to sell at Pittsburgh? Not if they aren't great coins... and even then it's tough going.

Everyone has an auction house now or is getting one. Yes, there is a lot being sold. In the seated area of the B&M sale, I'd say about 3 out of 4 coins (or more) as a rule did not sell. There were lots of runs of 4 to 6 coins in a row unsold. This doesn't bode too well for the auctions still to come this week. Ouch.

Maybe I should toss a few more bids into the Heritage sale as an afterthought. The JFS sale has a few nice type coins but they will do well. The commems will likely explode. But the Signature sale lots might be very spotty, esp. in the final session or two.

For me, it is disappointing that auctions use reserves as the norm rather than the exception. Coins that do not sell tell me not that the market is softening, but that the owner has unrealistic expectations. A lot of these coins are dealer consignments that the dealers couldn't sell. Simply putting the coin in an auction expecting a reaction like Viagra is unrealistic if the owner retains the same lofty price expectation for the coin that didn't sell. If the coins can't be had at my price, I ain't buying, and I think it is important to send a message that the owner has an opinion of the coin not shared by the market.

    Just my thoughts.

  • Well, it's like pricing your home. If you get no offers, then the price is too high, and you will have to hold onto it, or lower your ask. Dealers want to make money so really do not want to hold onto inventory long, but most collectors may have high reserves to see if anyone bites. If not, they sit on it - no loss to them. I guess the market will be at or near its peak if a lot of reserves don't hit. But Key dates, Low pop high grade lincolns, key rarities still doing o.k., IMO.
