My newest coin, an 1883-O Morgan with decent toning

Here are some photos of my latest purchase. I normally buy only SLQ's, but this coin kinda struck me as attractive, with some reddish-goldish tone. Oddly, something must hve rested on the coin, like a piece of lint or string, which unfortunately prevented the coin from toning evenly on the obverse. Either way, I liked the look, so I bought it. It's not easy trying to accurately image the color, but this is about as good as I can do for now.

I like them like that, with the reddish bronze toning and luster underneath. Looks very nice.

Nice coin. Clearly not AT, and probably premium for the grade as such.

  • Thanks guys. I'm still learning my way around this series. I think it's a fairly easy series to grade in the ms63-64-65 range, but gets more difficult before and after that. I'm still learning the nuances of the different mints and what the strike characteristics are. It seems a lot of these are struck with pretty flat breast feathers on the eagle, but again, just getting to know the series.

    Oops. Edited out a typo.

JxnBoy: I agree with you about grading Morgans in the 63-65 range. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes easy. There are a lot of nice Morgans to be had in this grade range with great luster, strike and minimal abrasions.

    Nice coin!! Enjoy!
