OT- Hurricane Charley report

Hurricane Charley came by the house last night between 11PM and midnight. We were extremely fortunate that neither our family or our homes were damaged. Our losses were limited to a set of wind chimes I forgot to bring in image. I'm hoping Beth (a2labmom) and Rob (Lord Marcovan) and families fared as well as we did, as well as some of the forum memebers living in the coastal Carolinas. A lot of folks lives changed forever in the past twenty-four hours.

I grew-up in Port Charlotte, FL which was one of the hardest hit areas. I have an aunt who is still there as well as several friends. I have not been able to contact any of them yet.

It looks like the death toll may be very high. I hope it is not as bad as it looks like it may be, but things don't look good at all.image

  • Thank goodness your damage was limited to wind chimes. You got through OK, now lets pull for the rest of 'em.
  • We are doing just fine here in Jax. Never got more than some rain from Charley. Mom and dad (live in Port Charlotte) however...they lost their fence, had the pool cage blown off the house and lost a few spots of facia. Basiclly, me and my family are all just fine.

I haven't been around much lately (big surprise, huh? image ) because of work. I have been averaging about 9 hours in the office, come home, eat and then spend about another 4 hours working from home. Hopefully it will lighten up soon. I sure miss chatting with all my buddies.

I grew up and lived most of my life (outside of military and federal service) in Maderia Beach Florida which is in Pinellas County. The Tampa Bay area got spared from this one. My aunt and Uncle from Donegal used to vacation in Port Charlotte and I can't even begin to image the destruction there.

Michael, I hope you hear from Auntie and your friends soon.image

Edit to add: We are expecting the rain and wind from Charley up here in NH. I know places like NY, NJ, CT, Mass and parts of NH are in a tropical storm warning. But that's nothing compared to what the storm was like when it hit Fl.
Here's the track of Charley now:

  • I just heard from one of my brothers who is in contact with the part of the family in Port Charlotte. The entire county is without phone service. Even their cell service is intermittant, at best.

I'm glad everyone (so far) is fine. My aunt also had no problems.

We're fine. Got some wind and rain, but ironically, that was all before Charley made landfall in Florida. While the storm was offshore just beside us it was totally calm and there was even a little sunshine. Weird.

This one had me worried, not only because my mother lives in St. Petersburg (they also had a near miss), but because here in SE coastal GA, the Gulf storms that come across the Florida panhandle overland and hit us from behind are often a bigger threat to us than the Atlantic storms, probably because the Gulf Stream carries those up to hit the Carolina coast. We're tucked in nicely, and don't stick out like North and South Carolina.

Glad all is well with you image. I didn't think the storm hit St. Simons Island, but when I didn't see you in the Forum, I was concerned.

    Just a Yeti episode. image

I've been spending more time on the MD forum lately. It's still slow, but much livelier than it used to be, since we started doing competitions.

I've noticed this forum seems to be much slower these last few weeks. Maybe it's just the absence of my excessive post count. image
