i really thought that blue ia would have went for ALOT more, i would consider it a steal, i have seen VERY few with 9 centering. despite the recent population spurt for some of the tough 72's i think it will be a long time before five more blue ia's turn up.
I thought about going higher on the Blue IA, but decided that $387 to upgrade from a PSA 8 to a PSA 9 was about my limit. The Grote would have gone higher than that. Hopefully, the seller got 5 bills for that one. If he didn't... he left money on the table...
So - I'll just wait for the next one, or the next one...
Just picked up the Dick Dietz IA in PSA 9. I remember two of them selling for over $200 apiece. Mine cost $45 last night. Patience, patience, patience...

There's a 1972 Topps Ted Abernathy PSA 9 1 of 1, out on eBay now, just incase you hadn't seen it. Its ugly as heck though, not sure why it didn't get a PD qualifier.

Yeah, thanks! Saw the Abernathy, I looked at some other ones and they dont have that yellow stuff on it, so I'm not bidding on it, agree w/ you that w that many marks it should be PD...EO
the abernathy is prone to all kinds of print defects. i can recall seeing one with super sharp focus. they all seem to have a fuzzy look to them. in the words of mike castaldi "they all look like skeletor" very funny but true.
Well, as predicted, a second Grote 9 just got listed, though it looks o/c to me and not as nice as the last one...there is a nice Expos team card that also got listed though, very tough in 9.
Scott & Eric> If you're talking about the yellow lines - one vertical and one horizontal by his left elbow - those are not PD, they're a characteristic of the card. About 1/2 the Abernathys I've ever seen have that. I'm 90% sure my PSA 8 has this, but I can't tell right now. I'm closing on my house on Monday so all my cards are packed up at the moment.
My guess is they had two printing plates. One of which had a mark, hair, or other imperfection causing this. Then when they changed the plate the problem went away.
In all seriousness Eric, I think you should bid. That's by far the best example of the Abernathy I've ever seen. Besides, if a better one comes along you can buy that one and keep the better example. As tough as this card is in PSA8, it may be a while before we see another 9 - the second Grote notwithstanding.
