1965 Charlie Smith #22 PSA 8 just sold for $974

There are 6 PSA 8s and 2 PSA 9s of this super tough 1965 card. I know where 2 PSA 8s and 1 PSA 9 reside...making this card in effect a POP 4 in PSA 8. I know a Smith card sold for $700 within the past year....when the POP was 5 in PSA 8.

  • WOW. 3rd high bid at $888. It looks like the next one will command high 3 figures also.

Is this one of those cards where a 7 goes for $20?

    Loves me some shiny!
  • The last 7 I saw sold for $50

  • Who is Charlie Smith, and why the $974 price tag when there's five more out there? A high number I can better understand, but this is card #22. Sorry, not totally versed on super duper prices for low number commons.

The answers pretty simple. There are way more people building high end 1965 Topps sets than Charlie Smith PSA 8's. I know 2 of the top three bidders...and it looks like this card will command a premium for quite some time. The 1965 collectors are damn luck to have primeeagle focused on 1961's or this could've gone for several thousand.

This one looks like a decent card and it's on EBAY right now.

I just received verification from the owner of one of the PSA 9s....that he bought his PSA 9 for only $300 !!!
  • I would say that the seller of that psa 9 left quite a bit of money on the table.

    Acowa,

The Charlie Smith scan is fairly typical of most of his cards. The centering is almost always way off. One of the psa 8's out there looks more like a psa 6. I've only seen one Smith cards that was well centered. Others are close enough to meet psa's guidelines but still not great looking cards.

He played for the Yankees also.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!
