Questions for Registry Collectors...

This thread has probably been created by many others but I was wondering what factors led you guys to start the registries that you have been working on?

When I collected as a kid I pretty much bought all kinds of cards. I started out with the sets that were available at the corner stores in packs. (Sadly they were the 87-90 Topps) but smartly enough I went with the old cards and bought what I could. (Where I live in Canada baseball card stores are not widely available so I was limited to what they had)

I stopped collecting in high school and through college but got back in it around 98 partipating in the old weekly Beckett auctions and other auctions sites but not Ebay. I ended up with a whole bunch of 61 Topps in that time so that kind of became my set of choice although grading wasn't very common back then.

I just got back into my childhood hobby a few months ago and started where I left off with 61's, but I found it too daunting.

I looked at a T201 and T202 I had bought back in the day and figured T201's were my ticket, as they were pre WW1 which was always my favourite, a fairly small set that is pretty affordable, with just the Cobb card being a pricey item.

Anyways that's what I settled on. I really like the graded card idea and its helped make what's a much different hobby from when I was a kid or even back in 98 a fun endeavor.

The only downside is all those raw cards I bought for fairly cheap prices that ended up being fairly solid when I graded them. (Finding these if few and far between)

Did anyone buy anything from those old beckett auctions? I bought some autograph balls from one of their charity auctions back in 98 and I figure I'll have to send them to PSA to get authenticated but with what I've read about Dimmagio and Williams counterfeits I'm a bit scared.

  • Anytime you buy an auto of the bigger stars that are routinely counterfeit (Williams, DiMaggio, Mantle, and Ruth) and it is not already authenticated, you run a big risk. Especially if you don't really know who you are buying from. It doesn't hurt to send it in if you really want to know. At least you'll have peace of mind. image
