1900 O/CC

Why is it that a 1900 O/CC is NOT required to have a complete Morgan CC set? I just completed my CC set and the O/CC is definately there.

I would also think that if you are going for a full O or even S set, that the 'over' mintmarks should be required for that as well.

Anyone else feel that this should be required?

I don't feel any aspect of coin collecting should be "required"

    required by whom?

  • Well... because a CC Morgan set would imply that all the coins were struck at Carson City. Was the 1900 O/CC struck at Carson City? Therefore, it is not a Carson City coin... thank you...

Buy the coins that you like...take your time and enjoy the hunt for quality. As for completing a set, it is nice to say a set is complete, but when is a set really complete when one considers varieties? There really is no right or wrong answer. Is a Morgan set complete without all the VAMS that represent a difference that can be seen with a naked eye?

It was not struck at Carson City but used the reverse die intended for use at Carson City. Therefore it counts.

I know its considered a variety, and I understand why, but I think that a full set needs that variety.

I agree, buy what you like. I guess I like varieties, they make the Morgan series very intersting for me.

BTW: I know nothing is required, it's word usage, used to convey a feeling..........................

Agreed... if EDS varieties are considered, there are at least 6 different 1882-0/S varieties. There must be at least 5-7 different 1900-O/CC varieties. Varieties is what makes just about any series more interesting...image

Hey, if it counts to you, include it with your collection -- no one's stopping you.

Technically it's an "O" mint mark.

Carson City dies were used because of a shortage of dies at the New Orleans mint.

If you think it fits, go ahead, include it in your set. But don't come here complaining because the Registry (Someone else's idea of a Carson City set) doesn't match your complete wants. But the fact is, it's not a Carson City coin, which is why it is not in the Carson City Registry Set. And as for a Full O or S set, sure, the OMMs from there could be included in the set, but the under mintmark doesn't determine where the die was used, only where it was originally intended to be used...

Collecting is so personal. If you think you need the O/CC date for a complete set, then you should get it. I think its a nice variety and makes a great piece to get maybe at the end of your collecting for the Morgan series to feel "complete."

All that is "required" in collecting is your own personal satisfaction with your acquisitions.

  • Include what you want in your collection and be happy. I collect what I enjoy and what constitutes is a "complete set" to somebody else means nothing to me.
