Would someone post a pic of the 1961 Franklin half double die reverse, please?

Thanks in advance,

Yup, I did find one in one of those "unopened" sets that everyone around here pans.

I don't have a closeup pic of my piece handy - it resides in a bank vault.

But the doubling is very dramatic on the left side of the reverse, the I in UNITED is almost two separate letters! E Pluribus Unum is also dramatically doubled. As is the pintle on the left side of the bell.

I hope that helps, I will post a couple of photos from the Flynn & Wexler reference book.

Here are the pics of the photos in the Flynn & Wexler book. They also list two other DDR's with less doubling.

Let me know if I can be of further help.

  • Cameonut,
Have you a photograph of the other DDR varieties? I recently had the good fortune to open up a 1961 mint Proof Set and found, what I hope turns out to be one of these other DDR varieties! I submitted the coin about a week ago to PCGS for grading.

Oh, and a big Hello to everybody. I'm a new collector and have been reading the PCGS forum for the past 8 months or so. I've enjoyed watching.

1960 NYG - Glad I was able to help.

Snoodle - welcome aboard. The two attached files are for the other two 1961 DDR's in the Flynn & Wexler book. I hope they help.

  • Cameonut,
Thank you. The 1961 DDR 001.jpg (19kb) picture looks like the coin I submitted to PCGS. If there are three different DDR varieties for the 1961 Franklin proof, would that mean there were three seperate error dies making these proof coins in 1961?
I'm anxious to see how this coin grades. image

The ANR/Stack's Sale in June had two identical 1961 DDR - in NGC PF 67 - only one sold ($1800, if memory serves me right) ; I missed the sale and would have liked to have that other one...oh well.

The Wexler & Flynn book lists only 3 DDR's with pictures. But the Coneca site lists 9 DDR's for 1961 - go to Conecaonline.org and look at the Variety Master listing on the left. No pictures, but sometimes the descriptions help to determine which variety you have.
