Variety Question on an 1854-O Seated Half ?

jdimmickjdimmick Posts: 9,675 ✭✭✭✭✭
My pic's are the best I can do with my current camera, but can anyone determine if this is the 1854-o Double date or the triple date, or simply a repunched date!

All the digits in the date appear to be at least doubled including the arrows, but inside the 8 and bottom of 4 it looks like its possibly tripled?

Its pretty significant as even from eye-ball glance you can tell the date has an " up on a pedestal" type look to it?

also, any premium for this and if so about what ?

thanks
Jim

    Jim,

Doubling and tripling is, I think common, and doesn't warrant it's own variety or added value.
You might even see some doubling on the stars???

    Hi Jim,

Nice pick up. Thought I'd quote from Wiley & Bugert's Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Half Dollars.....

" Halos can often be found around the stars, the digits in the date, and to a lesser extent, the central
device of many head dies for this date. We believe that the cause for this 'halo' phenomenon can be
traced back to the construction of a temporary master die for this date as well as 1853 and 1855. In each
year, a regular working die was converted to a temporary master die by repunching all stars and heavily
impressing a date and arrow heads. All elements were impressed with such force that the bases of the
punches transferred to the die as halos around each element. ...... We believe this accounts for the doubling and tripling of features (e.g. date and stars) found on many dies of this date."

Elwood's 100% correct, this variety does not warrant any premium.

Still a nice coin though, looks like a 35-40 from what I can see of it.

    Seateds are any interesting series.
