Whats up with this Washington?

I was digging through some circulated washington silvers and found this. I figured it was just scraped away or something. But looking closer it looks nice an smooth except the "X" scratched across it. It is about half of the thickness of the average quarter. Any ideas? Im sure its just damage but I figured I'd post it anyways.

Most likely was sanded or lathed down to a smooth surface. Probably was half of a magician's coin where it fit into another. Probably part of a double headed quarter.
