CAUTION: Inflated ego within...

Without intending to be a pompous _ss, here are some before and after photos. I had to post since I just got the "afters" in the mail today. Funny thing is, I had to get in my car and chase down the mail lady because she just put the slip in my mailbox instead of coming to the door. I can see the mailbox from my window, so I knew she didn't try the door! I'm not mad- I think I made quite a funny sight running out to the car like an idiot and flagging down the mail lady. I was very careful not to look suspicious or dangerous- the state of caution we're in might mean the postal workers are packin (more than normal that is)! imageimageimageimage Sorry for the crappy pictures- I'm still trying to learn how to get better pics. These are all of my attempts at crossing. Obviously I cracked three of them out before sending them in to relieve any prejudice that may or may not occur.

*OT*
On a side note I noticed a number of folks that have been striken with a tragedy here very recently. If you are one of those people and you are reading this- my heart goes out to you. There is nothing that can make up for the loss of a loved one, but your greatest asset is the people remaining in your life. Draw strength from them and keep your loved ones alive in the positive memories that you carry with you. Time will heal wounds, and remember that your loved ones would only want you to live and be happy. Sorry to be OT, but I had to vent a little.

Outstanding results! I wonder what the result would have been had they been sent as crossovers, rather than cracked out?

  • Thanks for the detailed pictures. I like seeing crossover/crackout results. I'll be posting several myself, in the near future.

Nice, too bad there aren't many of the old green-label PCI holdered coins around any more.

What NGC coins upgraded, I just read in another thread that NGC coins NEVER upgrade and are graded so loose they will ALWAYS downgrade! HMMMM.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

I'm wondering what kind of sledge hammer you used to get the coins out of NGC holders. Mine crack much cleaner at the seam than that.

    Congrats on the crossovers/grades
  • Based on what I've read over the past year, I wouldn't discount the significance of that 1926 Buffalo reslabbed at PCGS at only one point lower from a Gold PCI slab. I've read horror stories about those PCI slabs.
  • Some guys just have all the luck.
Did you win the lottery too?
    Really Nice coins though.

  • buffnut, it looks like you know your Buffalo Nickels and how to "buy the coin, not the holder". Congratulations on your cherry picks.

    Buffnut,

I want to see close-ups of that 1926-D. The obverse strike looks far better than the 63 NGC gave it.

That's the only way to do crossovers, I wouldn't dream of wasting my money sending a coin in the slab.

Looking at your cracked slabs, I have a suggestion though. Cracking them out like that is dangerous, that plastic is hard enough to scratch the coin. If you have a vise, use it to crack the coin. If you don't have a vise, get a 5" C clamp, the principal is the same for both. Put the coin in one way, and tighten until you hear a crack. Put the coin in the other way, and do the same. Repeat gently until the two parts separate. While you are doing this, put a small towel over the slab to make sure no small pieces fly. If you don't want to use a towel and want to see exactly what you are doing, use goggles.

You know the answer to that, don't you, Russ?

Ahh- great advice, thank you. I just cracked them with a pair of pliers, trying to be as careful as possible. Here is a slightly better pic of the 26D for those who asked. This was taken before the crackout:

  • I agree that this must be a scam. How many times have we been told by the self appointed experts around here that NGC coins are ALWAYS at least one point overgraded vs the PCGS coins.

I guess i'm not the only one who has proven this is NOT true.
  • I have to chuckle when I hear of such an assertion. The way I go about buying coins is simple really- I look for coins that have the characteristics that I am looking for in a nice buffalo nickel. If it is already slabbed, I compare the assigned grade with what I would consider to be a nice example of that grade. If it is affordable and meets or exceeds my standards, then I buy it- whether it is raw, NGC, PCI, ICG, or whatever. If it doesn't slab at PCGS for my registry set for some reason, then I learn from that coin what characteristics keep it from slabbing, and I have added another tool to my arsenal. Nothing, I repeat, NOTHING can make up for a) reading the reference books, and b) simple life experience with buying and selling coins. I'll add that one of the more important things I have done to expand my knowledge of buffs is to simply look at as many as I can. It's amazing what can be learned about strike tendencies, grading techniques, and pricing trends just by looking at as much material as you can. I do 99.9% from the computer, as I find that the local show stock here in Atlanta is quite picked through and overpriced (Bill Fivaz is a local here image ). I hope this doesn't come off as bragging, but instead informative. While it seems it is harder and harder to find good deals out there, with the right eye and patience you can still find them!

Best to all and many thanks for your positive comments- the wife doesn't understand my coin collecting, so I have to show my successes here to get any sort of positive feedback! She has threatened (jokingly) to break them all out of the slabs and buy a coke if I ever tick her off badly enough.
